PD170 TDi 5W30 Fully Synthetic VW 507

Featured Replies

Lads, I know this has been covered a lot on here before, I've used the search function to determine that I need 5W30, fully synthetic and that it has to meet VW 507 specification for my DPF.

What I'm still a little unsure about is the differences in brand?

There is a sticker in my manual folder and on the slam panel recommending Shell Helix.

I've also found on here that a lot of you recommend Opie Oils, they certainly seem very well priced.

The car was last serviced at a Skoda dealer just before I bought it so I've no idea what brand of oil they used. I only need to top it up so would prefer to use the same brand.

Can anyone confirm what the dealers use or if I am OK to mix brands (as long as it meets the VW 507 spec)?

Curiously the Shell Helix seems quite a bit cheaper than the Castrol Magnatec Edge?

*edited to change from Magnatec to Edge, its the Edge that demands a premium, the Magnatec is about the same price as the Shell Helix.

As long as its 507 its fine.

Any oil which is a spec VW507 00 approved one is suitable for your car regardless of brand There is a list of oils which meet that spec in the thread below. That list does not include oils which the manufacturers claim to be especially suitable for cars requiring VW 507 00 or which use similar 'iffy' wording..

P.S. I'm tempted to buy at that price for my cars.

Good price but new seller with only 5 feedback so I'm out.

Does this stuff go off? What if its 2 years old and will be in the motor for another year on top of that?

Thanks Grizzle, when VAT and delivery are taken into consideration both the Mobil and Quantom oils you linked are around £40.00.

This was the reason for one of my initial questions, what differences are there between brands?

To pay 25% more for Mobil or Quantom over Shell when all three meet VW 507 I need to see what I'm getting for my extra £10...

Why? All eBay sellers (and buyers) have to start at 0 at some point.

It always makes me laugh when people on eBay prevent new members with low feedback from bidding. If the one person interested in your item is new then you've just lost a potential sale.

If you check his feedback you can see that he has already received feedback from one happy buyer of the Shell Helix.

The second one to sell is me :)

Aslong as you know its a fully synthetic 5w30 oil the dealer used then YES you can mix brands.

Dealers will use whomever they have the best deal with, generally Castrol at the moment but may also use Quantum oil.

Thanks Tech1e, I didn't realise that I just assumed (wrongly) that Skoda would insist as part of their franchise requirements that their dealers use a specific brand of oil.

As you always tend to see car manufacturers recommend a brand of oil I'd have expected that Skoda would be more stringent.

It sounds to me then that the 5 litres of Shell Helix 5W30 fully synthetic VW 507 oil for £30 should do the trick

they used castrol edge in mine last month.

Good dealer! Of all the oils I've been pricing up Castrol Edge was the most expensive by a long shot.

Apart from this of course, I considered it and then thought it might be a little excessive :giggle:

Works out at £4.19/litre, better than the £5.99 I've just paid :giggle:

magnatec pro is the trade version and costs much less. u just not getting fancy bottle.

Yeah...Catch 22.

I've only ever bought 5 or 6 things (including a Skoda) on ebay and never thought I'd have enough "points" to attract an unblinkered audience to any items I might want to sell (Porsche Cayenne 20" wheels for example) and so not get a realistic price. TBH I'd rather sell to like-minded forumites anyway.

Can anyone confirm shelflife of the oil as Halfords keep sending me vouchers which I maximise by buying Edge 507.00 on my trade card. It'll be a shame to have to put it in my Felicia!

My five litres of Shell Helix arrived this morning, VW 507 confirmed on the bottle. A real bargain at 29.99 delivered

I don't think oil has a shelf life does it? Surely providing it's sealed then it will be fine? The bottle I have has 07/2011 on it which I assume is the date of production??

yeh 07/11 is the manufactured date

£125ish for a main dealer oil change?

DIY; £29.00 oil, £10 oil filter, £10 air filter, two hours of your weekend - FOC = £50.

When my Octavia is a year or two older and any chance of goodwill gestures from Skoda are dead and buried I'll be servicing myself.

This sounds good to me, and I guess a relatively ok job, even for an amatuer??

Can anyone provide a link to some sort of tutorial? Also, I've read in the past that oil overfill can cause dfp problems, so does anyone know the correct procedure (or the exact amount of oil required) for a PD170?

Go cautiously with the refill. It's much easier to add oil than it is to take it out.

Put in a bit less than the recommended amount to start with, including filling the filter with oil. Run the engine for a minute or so, stop, wait a couple of minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump and then check & top up as required.

Overfilling is a definite no-no for the catalyst and DPF which will get slavered with the stuff if the level is too high. It can also be bad for seals due to excess crankcase pressure.

Apart from fussy DPFs (which PDs may or may not have depending on their age) the main reason we poor PD folk have to ponce about with special oils is that in order to squeeze both the PD and valve cams into the head, VAG had to make the cam lobes too narrow for comfort, and consequently they need extra lubrication quality.
