ABS issue

Featured Replies

Hi all,

after doing a search I can't really find what advice or result I'm after, so here goes.

A couple of weeks back I noticed when pressing the brakes when driving there was a faint bleeping noise coming from somewhere, didn't think much of it. Suddenly yesterday when pressing the brakes I'm getting a vibration coming through the pedal along with the faint bleeping noise. Then after a minute or two the ABS and ASR warnings light up and the vibration goes away and also no bleeping.

I have taken off both front wheels and given the ABS sensors a good clean using WD40 and also tried to clean down the hole to give the ABS rings a clean to. They were a little bit grubby but nothing untoward. I still have the issue after all this.

Any ideas guys? Is just a case the one of the sensors has gone belly-up or is this something more sinister. :'(

Code scan may give a fault code, and that will narrow things down. In the meantime, check your battery, battery earth cable, and the large blade fuses on top of the battery. If it's the ABS pump it's not cheap.

Pop up to me Tomorrow/Friday and we'll run a fault scan.

Hey, I thought I would re-throw this thread back into the mix. I still havn't got to the bottom of this.

I have fun a fault scan and all it is saying is cant communicate with front left ABS sensor, so what does this mean?

I have replaced the front left sensor and cleaned some of the gunk out from down in the hole. However I have not cleaned the ring with a cotton but yet.

I am dreading this being the ABS pump so any further help or suggestions would be excellent. Many thanks

There isn't a ring to clean, it's part of the wheel bearing on the n/s.

Use VCDS and read the ABS ECU, measure block 1 will give you the speeds of the wheels. If the left hand speed sensor isn't picking up a speed then it could be a duff sensor or could also be the wheel bearing itself. Could also be the wiring to the ECU but I'd look at the sensor and bearing first.

Ok, well the sensor is a new one so I can rule that out for sure. I replaced the bearing about 3 months ago so may be that.

I know when it first started going wrong the speedo didn't read correctly then once it had given up trying and the ABS warning lit up the speedo worked and still does work fine, does this narrow it down at all?

When I mentioned ring I meant the part of the bearing facing the sensor, sorry :giggle:

Was the bearing a genuine one? Has it been fitted correctly?

If seen people press them in before now and break the retaining ring that holds the bearing in as they haven't used to correct tools. The bearing then comes out of the housing a little bit, the air gap between the sensor and the pick up is to big and then the light comes on.

The bearing was not bought from skoda so I guess not genuine. The retaining ring still looks to be in place also. If there it too much of a gap is it possible to press it back into position or is all lost?

Can I rule out the ABS pump at this stage as it didn't show up as at fault on the scan?

OEM bearings from a skoda dealer are a MUST.......I had my front bearings go at the time a few years back when there was a shortage of OEM ones (major european problems).....the head mech at the dealership I knew...so he got a set of the exact same manufacture (FAG i think? but not Skoda) and fitted them correctly.....18months later started getting lots of problems with ABS light etc....both the reluctor rings on the bearings had "dead spots" on them causing the ABS to mis-read!....So a new set of genuine OEM was fitted this time!!!!.....aaaarrggghhhhhh.....

aaah ok, well tbh at this point in time I' be quite happy with 'only' having to replace the bearing

Just a bit of feedback with this problem I had. It turns out the bearing had moved in an outwards direction by about 2-3mm and therefore caused all the issues. Now sorted :)
