1.9 diesel non starter

i have a 274k mile W reg octavia which has decided not to start, it drove fine when i parked it up, now it just turns over and doesnt seem to be firing. Any ideas where to start looking? i was going to check for fuel at the injectors when i get some time and daylight.

I dont have access to code scanners, and if its anything expensive it will be scrapped along with the car it was bought to replace as i dont have much money due to buying it.

Fuel? can you see a few bubbles in the clear section of fuel line just after the filter?

Have you checked with a spare key - it might be an immobiliser issue.

Anti-shudder valve stuck shut? this is a valve located within the EGR assembly - bolted onto the inlet manifold.

yes there is a bubble in the fuel line, not tried a spare key, will do that.

Anti shudder valve, does the egr have to be removed to check this?

A few bubbles are good - shows there is fuel at least that far

The anti-shudder is on tje rear on the EGR assembly, there should be a spring loaded arm attached to an actuator. When the engine is stopped a vacuum is applied for a few seconds and then it should spring open. On high mileage vehicles it can become sticky and get stuck on the closed position (= no air for the engine).

The image below shows part of the EGR assembly, with air inlet rubber hose removed. The valve flat can be seen inside the - horizontally, and is controlled by the actuator on the left hand side (as viewed) of the assembly:

funnily enough i think i checked that the arm was free when i had a quick look on saturday, tried the spare key, no joy

Right then, I have now got it running, but I need more advice from the clever ones....

The flap is working freely, and the bubble in the fuel line moved while cranking, so I gave it a very short squirt of that hell in a can stuff, Easy start, and it fired into life. It started easily after that on its own, so, what I need to know is.... why did it need a drop of ether to help it? is the pump on its way out? and can they just be swapped, or are they coded to the ECU?

If its just a simple swap job I may get a second hand one and fit it, but I don't have the money to waste on trial and error jobs.

The bloke I bought it from didn't tell me everything about it,such as the electrical fault in the dash clocks, or the fact that it had been crash repaired (I found this on the V5 when it arrived).

just been for a run in it, it started easily, then after about a mile it blew the pipe in the picture above off (not clamped on), started again, then 1/2 a mile later it died and DID NOT want to start, so a hefty dose of easy start got it going and i drove it home, looks like its time to get rid!

Electrical fault on the dash - is probably a dry joint on the voltage regulators on the PCB dash, this can be part masked by removing a fuse (but the trip computer will forget settings once the key is removed).

Pump, iirc is in the fuel tank (access via under the rear seats), and it is not related to the ECU.

Maybe I an getting confused with my old 306HDI. I don't have my workshop manuals with me, so I can't check. Sorry if I have giving out some duff info :-(
