anybody running a more "sporty" 17" tyre

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just wondering, anybody running a more "sporty" 17" tyre (lower profile) like for example 205 45 r17 or 215 40 r17?

I know this messes with the speedometer but it's in the right direction (when your speedometer reads 100, you'll actually be doing less)

Reason of my asking is that I have a new wheel in mind but I've photoshopped it and it looks too big in 18" so I'm considering going back to 17" but would like to have a slightly more stretched tyre

cheers

B

I have 17'' wheels with 205/40/17 tyres while the std set up was a 205/45/16. My speedo now says 100mph while the gps say i'm doing a true 106mph so it's raised the gearing a touch.

Fitting undersized tyres could be interesting with the insurance company

smaller rolling circumference will increase mileage??

smaller rolling circumference will increase mileage??

indeed... effect will be minimal though

also doesn't really matter as the octavia is now my second car (got a company car) so I'm not doing a lot of miles

cheers

Std octavia fit is 205 50 17 or iirc 205 55 16. The nearest for the 17" rims is 225 45 17.

Now why would you want to go that small? That will

1 show you doing more mph than you really are.

2 put more miles on the car.

3 Totally mess the mpg readings

4 a lot noisier

Check out www.carbibles.com

Will tell you the amount of mph you will loose.

If you want less rubber wall get 18" with 225 40 18 on.

I don't see the point in making the car slower and use more fuel per mile in that way?

205/40/17 looks really odd too :giggle:

It looks like you got wheels from a corsa or something??? It really looks strange ????

What wheels you looking at mate? Im sure the 18s will look spot on

Photoshop always seems to make them look big but in reality they will look cool B)

But as it may be pointed out , i am a fan of big rims :smirk: and dont see 18s as that ;)

Now 20s on the other hand lol :giggle:

all this talk about losing top speed is pretty irrelevant

you will gain a little acceleration as the effective gearing will be shorter - this will be far more useful than a few mph of top speed

downsides are reduced mpg and putting more miles on the car - give it a try and let us know how you get on!

p.s. not sure if vcds can correct speedometer so your odo doesn't drift

lol, I have now 18" S8 replica's, and thinking of getting S6 replica's

didn't think they would look ok on an octavia but a photoshop looked good

still in doubt though as I still like the S8's

Unless the Octavia is on the limiter to hit top speed then you won't lose anything. Not that it really matters as no one drives their car flat out anyway.

Yes your honour :giggle:

Seriously, I don't think I've ever maxed out any of my cars in 12 years of driving and that includes my dog slow 306.

Even on trips through Germany I think I only saw 130 on the speedo on a section of autobahn and that was just for the novelty factor of being able to do so legally.

So thats the s6s in pic is it ? Im lost on the new audis lol

Whats the s8?

Audi rims always seem nice i fin

lol mine on the 20 inch A8s still make me grin when see pics :giggle:

At 70 mph indicated you lose the above amounts. You do notice it on a 100 mile drive. Don't know the actual math but it will add quite a lot of miles more won't it,

Its all down to the user tho but its something I wouldn't do as I do enough miles as it is without the car in effect doing more over the same distance.

These cars feel the best as std with prob just front and rear role bars done. That way you get the nice ride and the level cornering with the bars. Since getting the std fabia its amazing how harsh my octy really is. Love it tho! Its noisy enough tho without puttin smaller tyres on.

I've nudged and indicated 160 (private runway) but then nearly didn't make the bend :wonder: one of the biggest brown moments of my life.

I've always got my bikes flat out but not usually that bothered with cars as you need a longer runway.
