Dunlop SP01s

Featured Replies

Garage lent me a 1.4 Tsi Octavia yesterday. It had Dunlop SP01s.

Tyre noise was much worse than on my Dunlop SP01 shod Yeti. Shows what a sophisticated car the Yeti is!

The Octavia does suffer more road noise than the Yeti. No idea why.

Not quite an apples for apples comparison.

Despite the identical tread pattern the difference in profile between those fitted to the Octavia and the larger versions fitted to the Yeti will influence the noise generated.

I have the 17" SP01's fitted to my Scout and have driven a 1.2 Yeti courtesy car with the same tyres fitted and didn't notice a discernable difference.

The Yeti was much quieter overall than my Octavia but I put that down to the near silent petrol engine versus my somewhat agricultural PD diesel.

My Old 2006 L&K Octavia was way noisier than the Yeti. I'm not talking engine, though the CR140 engine is quieter than the PD yes, no, I'm talking about tyre roar. It was the biggest thing I didn't like about the Octavia, and I spent quite a bit having noise deadening material fitted to make it quieter, which helped, but it was never as quiet as my Yeti. It still could be improved big time though. My old e39 BMW had 50mm of sound insulation compared to the 5mm in the Octavia. Difference between a £13k car and a £35k car.

I had a 2006 Octy before the Yeti and a 1999 Octy before that. The Mk II Octy generated far more tyre roar than the other two.

Likewise also run both MK I & II Octavia's and the II is noticeable for this tyre roar phenomena. Reminded of it the other week when I had use of a 11 plate Octy Elegance running on 205/55 R16 Conti SportContact2's for three days. Noticable more tyre noise than from the Conti PremiumContact2's in 215/60 R16 size on the Yeti. Mind the wife's Fabia II is on a par with the Octy; also on Conti PremiumContact2's but 205/45 R16 and W rated :o Much quieter on the winter 195/55 R15 Bridgestones.

Oh a point to note; not inspired with confidence with any of these Conti offerings when it's cold and wet, despite the reviews and manufactures claims, be glad when they wear out and I can get something else.
