The benefit of using the 57i Induction kit over an OE replacement filter is that you get even more air in through the filter, as you are dispensing with the OE airbox with its somewhat limiting airflo

  • Resurrecting an old thread... My k&n has been in for a few thousand miles now and I'm convinced it DOES seem to have improved my fuel consumption. On a regular known run I'm seeing improvements of

Interesting observation and similar to what a motor tech mate of mine has been saying he gets in comparison to the standard 'paper' filter (Saab diesel). Take it your using the type you have to oil :wonder:

Had thought of trying one myself but was put off by something negative I read about them and DPF (exactly what now escapes me :wonder: )

Which model engine?:smirk:

A 7mpg increase?! :o WOW, I'm surprised.

I have had one sitting in the porch since I bought the car but never fitted it. I may put it in over Christmas though, having now read your post.

2.0 Diesel. I just want to know what a K and N filter is.

What is a K and N filter?

It's an oiled cotton airfilter that lets air through it far better than a standard paper one ...my paper one was about 5000 miles old so it can make a difference

Being a. Cautious sort I always dab all over the filter with a paper towel to soak up any surplus oil as it.could affect the airflow meter in the intake.

I might get one of these, its very common for cars to be quite restricted in this way, Imprezas for one do not breath well and by changing the air filter and exhaust (even just the back box) can lead to significant improvement, around 25-30hp in the Imprezas. For £35-40 it might be worth it for economy alone.

Just remember to mark the air filter housing, so the mechanic doesn't discard your K&N filter for a Skoda type during service.

Cant see it on a diesel personally as as clean std filter will filter more air than the engine can use.

but how easily does that air flow through the standard filter and how often are you willing to change the paper filter to keep it that way

Well if it is filtering more than is needed then it must be OK.

I change the filter @ EVERY service, certainly not at Skoda's recommended intervals (which IIRC is every 60k miles!)

I have changed this paper filter with 5000 miles on it and it made this much difference .....so I reckon to keep the same airflow as the K and N you would need to change the paper filter every 3000 miles or less

Can we not get a group buy?

As

FocusZtec user_popup.png has one he is going to fit it would be interesting to see if he gets the same or similar results.....and maybe see if we can get a group buy going after that....I know from experience that there isnt much leeway in the price and you may get just as good a price as anyone else by shopping around

Just before everyone gets carried away with 7 mpg better ....I did put this filter in place of a dirty 5000 miles use paper filter and I had noticed the mpg gouing down over the last few months....and just lately it was doing around 43mpg today it was up around 50mpg after fitting, but I would like someone else to see if they get as good results

I seem to remember a feature in max power in which they tried all sorts of different filters on a nova (what else!!lol) including removing the filter completely, and the best result in power came from drilling holes in the original air filter housing and using the standard filter.

AHHhhh but what happened 3000 miles later when the filter was getting clogged :giggle:

Gizmo 68small world isn't it? Until April I had a house in Sandpiper Road (off Page Road) in preparation for a permanent return to the UK; unfortunately cancelled.

Good to see a good result from K&N, I have been thinking about getting one since the throttle response is a little poor (still on its first filter, 15000 miles). Would warranty be an issue?

There have been reports elsewhere of the oil in the filters affecting the air mixture sensors on some diesels.

The last time I used a K & N filter was when I had my Skoda Rapid.

Tim, if you use the approved engine oil on the filter, it should be OK with the DPF.

On the other hand, I am doubtful of significant claims of beter performance and mileage on turbo-charged engines. The pressure drop across the filter is minimal compared to the turbo boost and other pressure losses.

On a naturally aspirated engine at high revs, it is another matter. In daily "polite" driving - IMHO, forget it.

Pedant warning.

It isn't engine oil you use on K & N filters, but a special light oil.

When I clean the filter and re oil it I always dab the whole filter and surrounding plastic with kitchen towel ...just to make sure, and then leave it for a few hours to soak into the cotton itself ....not had one single problem with six filters in six different cars.

the way I look at the filter is less resistence is good, more air in, more fuel in, bigger bangs, more power .... and the good thing is it lets more air in for far longer than the standard filter before it needs cleaning...and it will be a an awful long time before it needs changing saving money on that in the long rung run as well

Here is the oil....just ordered another cleaning kit as I am running low....but in fairness it has looked after at least one clean on six different filters
