leaking rear doors which sealent?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2002 skoda fabia and my rear doors have been leaking very badly for a while and now mould is forming.

I need to repair asap I have read on the forum that it is the door carriers but I cant find what sealent i need to use and what special screwdriver i need to remove the door cards?

Thanks for your help and advise :)

I have not done it myself, but need to do it as my rear door is leaking.

From what I've read on here the best sealant is the black Roof & Gutter sealant type.

I know it's a long thread, but have a read of this: Warning Fabia Door Leaks

Thanks for that :) does anyone know what "special" screwdriver i need?

thanks again for all your help hopefully my skoda will be a car again and not a boat!

I used black roof and gutter stuff, worked a treat after I applied it very liberally.

You don't need a special screwdriver, you just need to take caution you don't damage your trim. Using a normal screwdriver can damage it. I used a screw driver with a micro fibre cloth wrapped around it, and this worked great.

You can get rubber coated screw drivers also, used for electricians and for freshly painted screws. If you can pick one of these up on the cheap I'd recommend.

Did mine yesterday....

I used a 6inch long thin narrow blade screwdriver slightly bent in the middle of the 6inch long shaft, this is to reach up and disengage the clip on the front cover on the grab handle.

Used a small 2.5mm??? torqueTX star key for the screw that holds the handle/speaker holder

Used a large phillips/crosshead for the two main screws for the grab handle

Used a trim puller/wallpaper spatula covered in cloth to help remove the trim from the door (trim clips are very tough to remove carefully)

I could not remove my trim from the top window clip strip so left it "hinged" and proped open by resting the bottom section on the rear seat base.

My car is an early one so the carrier is bolted on and not riveted like the later ones! I undid all the carrier screws execpt for the ones along the top. This allowed me to carefully hinge the carrier away at the bottom by 3cm! (window was fully up). I then removed the stupid sh##y foam that Skoda used to "seal" the carrier to the door. (i did this for the bottom and 1/2 up the sides using cheap picker/scrapers/metal hooks) Then cleaned the mateing faces with meths and then squeezed the stuff I got from the dealers along the door side and pressed the carrier onto this This then squished out of the visiable join and the bolt holes (this is what I wanted). I then did a final smooth down etc.

The stuff I got from the dealer was Loctite 5910?? Black OEM instant gasket........more liquid than sealent and requires white spirit to remove from your hands etc......forms a liquid rubber type seal!!

The areas need to be bone dry, clean, and if you can remove any of the old OEM foam!!!!... B)

There's a video on YouTube that I have seen showing how to do the job :)

I have just finished the job now,

It was very easy took about 2 hours for both doors and used a full tube of sealent! i then soaked up the water in the footwells with paper towels the i used a hairdryer to get rid of the last of the water :)

Should be ok now i guess so fingers crossed thats the end of it!

Thanks for all your advise!

If you haven't taken the carpets up I suspect it will still be very damp underneath - particularly if with that quantity of water it's migrated into the front footwells.

Mine didn't - had to take the front seats out to get the rubber covered front underfelt out to dry it.
