Headlight beam setting

Featured Replies

Hi peeps just need some information on how to set the main headlight beam, if I place the car near a solid surface how close should I be and at what height should the beam hit the surface

Interesting question, watching this topic as would be very helpful!

I have seen something about this in another thread. Using a brick wall for levels and the like.

I know we're the adjust screw is and the 25ft gap just need to know height from the deck for dip as main beam should then be set ??

just guessing here. But on my former car Toyota Avensis -08 there was a marker in the mainbeam housing. This showed the center of the beam and also the height that the top of your beam should have at 25feet. Maybe transferreble to skoda?

With a driver in the seat set the car on absolutely level ground exactly 5M from a wall. Measure the height between the beam center and the floor at the headlamp. The MOT rules say there is a tolerance of 0.5% - 2.0% below absolute horizontal typically they are set to 1.2% in the UK. I've calculated that the horizontal cut off should hit the wall ~9cm lower than the measured height at the headlamp for a 1.2% dip. If you have 25' available the difference is 6" in old money. Additionally the center fo the beam where it kicks up should be between 0 and 2% to the left of center

So the headlight and dipped beam should be on the wall should be the same but for 9cm difference in the beam on the wall , if that makes sense ? emoticon-0103-cool.gif

The headlamps are set up with the adjusters for the dipped beam only and you get what you end up with for high beam, depending on the lens design and bulb accuracy. In theory, the high beam should give a hotspot at the same height as the lamp centres i.e. 0% dip, so yes that should be the case, I suppose. The problem is on the separate hi/lo lamps the high beam reflector is fixed and the projector beam is adjusted so depending on driver weight / how much the suspension has settled / how accurately the lamp housing mounts in the bodywork you probably couldn't rely on that for setting up.

They really do help to improve things, a highly recommended improvement for reasonable money and a little effort

Why can,t the beam be simply adjusted by using the height adjuster dial .?

The adjuster on the headlamp should be done at factory!, however for some reason they had not done my car or from what I can gather many more have been missed, my beam was landing( dipped) only 12feet away from the car , so the internal adjuster would never adjust to the extreme I required had to turn the green hex nut many times to get the level required, so at the service on the third will let the dealer know how bad it was, but to be honest to him he already knew and has contacted SUK to let them know.
