Meguin oil for 1.2 12V?

Featured Replies

Dear Forum Members! I have been using Magnatec for my car lately and would like to change over to Meguin 5w-30/40. Any experience with this oil? My car equipped with a 1.2 12V BME engine. Any reply is welcome! Thank you to all!

Just go to the dealer for oil, its brilliant quality, 100% right for the engine and surprisingly cheap!

To me £10 a 4l bottle for semi-synthetic is cheap. I'm guessing it's quite a bit more at a dealers.

Never heard of Meguin oil, but if it meets the specs specified by Skoda and is the correct viscosity it should be ok.

£10 - yeah but for what!!!

Dealer will be about £25, but the quality will be far superior.

I get this stuff £9.99 a 4l bottle in Home Bargains (still available in most stores at last check). I've picked this up in the past for £10 per 4l bottle and it's what's currently in my engine. I could easily have got the same stuff from that site and paid much more, and even they're claiming to be cheaper than RRP :) Just because it costs more doesn't make it better. Same could be said of buying a Skoda instead of a VW. Many people will mistakenly try to claim that just because a Fabia costs much less than a Polo, and has more features - that thw VW is a superior car.

To be fair its not as bad as I thought - I had a vision of it being Tesco value oil or something.

But... is it the right spec? Does it meet the proper VW number things?

Based on this web page http://www.meguin.de/meguin/produktdb.nsf/id/e_6561.html I'd say it seems Meguin know their stuff as oil manufacturers, particularly for VW engines. The 1.2 was a Skoda designed engine though (designed to replace the aged design of Skoda's 1.4 mpi which has origins dating back to the 70's and earlier). The 1.2 petrols in the Polo are the Skoda designed engine.

Potentially not for the 1.9tdi etc where it's more important, but certainly more than enough for my 1.4 8v. Not sure on the requirements for the 1.2 though.

What engine oil spec does your owner's manual say you need ?
