Oil top-up - really ?

Featured Replies

Every week in fact, just not brave enough to use their oil :giggle:

There's a reason she's answering the phones and not working with the oily bits ;)

Check it every week and top up as necessary

Any oil that meets the VAG numbers quote by others.

The one I received off this same seller had no foil seal but the plastic cap was unbroken.

I haven't seen a foil seal on bottles of oil for a long time.

Fuchs Lubricants (insert pun here) use foil seals, bought from Opie Oils in December.

You havnt shopped at ASDA for a long time then ;-)

I've been buying ASDA diesel lubricating oil ( Mobil #1 esp & now Castrol Edge 5W-30)) for quite a few years . My family all have VAG diesel cars and I do the simple servicing. All the ASDA 504/507 oils have had the "VW504/507" on the containers and all have had had foil sealed containers. There are many 5W-30 oils which meet some of the earlier VW specs, but it is important to buy the 504/507 spec oil ( with this labelled on the container) for long life variable servicing or for all cars with DFP.

Halfords do the Mobil #1 esp 504/507 oil in 5 Litre containers sometimes as special offer prices which work out cheaper than than the 4 Litre ASDA Castrol Edge 4 L container ( especially if you have a Halfords trade card).

Lol its fine I used in my MK1 vRS for around 80K and in my MK2 for 20K so far I think the spec C3 is the key in the equation...check it out next week :-)

I also use ASDA 5/30 Green tub after matching the specs it is the same as the castrol gold tub 5/30 VW 507. And at £20 for 5 litres you cant really say no!

Taxi - if it doesn't have the "VW504/507" on the container then it does not meet these specs even if the other specs are the same.

OK so what VW spec does ASDA green tub meet then? Because it has the same spec as castrol 5/30 gold that meets VW 507. Castrol green 5/30 meets VW 502 and does not have the same spec as ASDA green.

Taxi - dont know what "ASDA green tub" specs are .

Oil for the latest current petrol & diesel VAG engines should only be bought against the VW specs on the containers.i.e. oil should be bought by oil spec number not the general generic description (5W-30)

A quick reference to your car owners manual should reveal what oil specs are suitable for your engine.

Many oils are now specific to particular makes of car engines e.g. Mercedes , Ford, Peugot, Porche etc, all have diffent spec oils for their engines. It's important that the correct oil is used to maximise the engine performance & longevity.

5/30 isnt the only thing on the ASDA oil it also says VW SEAT SKODA AUDI BMW etc and on the back it says SAE 5W/30 API SM/CF ACEA C3 LOW SAPS/LOW ASH. The only other tub that matches that in ASDA is castrol gold which meets VW 507. castrol green 5/30 which meets VW 502 almost has the same spec as the ASDA tub apart from the C3 so the green tub ASDA oil must meet 507 spec. ASDA also do a 5/30 silver tub that is for FORDS.

Always check the oil, dont rely on the light, if it isnt working you will eventually get some funny noises telling you

the level has dropped to low.

As for oils on the net I have always found opie pretty competetive & you know you are getting the proper stuff.

I always buy a decent brand as oil is critical to turbos & for a little extra it gives a bit more peace of mind

Skoda Owner's Manuals all stipulate that the oil specifications (VW standards) stated must be indicated separately or together with other specifications on the bottle. If VW 507.00 is specified for your car and it is not specifically mentioned on the ASDA oil container, then that oil is not suitable for your car. Period.

I think that about sums it up

In life you get what you pay for, if a "similar" product is cheaper theres usually a reason why. Oil is the life blood of an engine, if you are ever unfortunate enough to need a blood transfusion you would hope the NHS would screen & choose the best for you. same applies to your engine IMHO

+ 1

Sometimes the most expensive oil is the cheapest in the long run.

It isnt that cheap if you buy a 2 litre tub it is £10. Im not convinced it does match the castrol spec...so if it doesnt then what vw spec does it meet as it does state suitable for VW SEAT SKODA AUDI

The important thing to note is that it doesn't meet VW504/507 .This why these specs are not on the container.

The fact that it does meet some other unspecified VW specs is irrelevant .

Once again I urge you to check your owners manual for the correct oil specification and then choose an oil that has these specifications on the container.

We could go on all day lol

  • 1 month later...

Ok so here we go again, lol heres a simple break down of the Castrol Gold SAE ACEA 5W/30 VW 504 507 Spec. The SAE Confirms the viscosity has been worked out by the SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS. The ACEA confirms the ASSOCIATION DES CONSTRUCTEURS EUROPEENS D'AUTOMOBILES Have classified the oils quality requirements. The 5W is the oils viscosity the 30 bit is is the oils ability to maintain its viscosity at a certain temp (5W/40 maintains viscosity 5W at a higher temp). The C3 bit is an ACEA classification that confirms the oil is 'Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC (Three way catalyst) in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines, with a minimum HTHS (High temp/high shear rate viscosity) of 3.5mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life. Now the ASDA green tub fully synthetic has the same markings 5W/30 ACEA C3 the only reason it doesnt state VW 504 VW 507 is only because it has not been presented to VW for approval, although ASDA have labelled it as being suitable for VW SEAT SKODA etc. So at £20 for 5 litres! You CANT go wrong :-)

If any company can afford to get oil tested by VW then Wallmart must be top of the list - which begs the question why they haven't. JMTPW.

adds to the cost, and goes against the very nature of their stack 'em high sell 'em cheap philosophy.

Yep and they would also have to include Mercedez And BMW as castrol do and I bet those three stamps of approval dont come cheap which will be why castrol is more expensive.

Think i will stick with the 5 litres of Shell Helix from Euro Car Parts rather than put some Asda own brand oil in that doesn't meet VAG spec.

Always used shell helix since had my octy, that's what the dealer gave me as a top up bottle when i first bought the car.

SAE and ACEA Seems to think it does it just hasnt been blessed by VW.

I bought 2x shell helix 1litre top ups from opie oils and they didn't have foil seal. They do have the plastic seal on the cap though that separates and leaves a collar on the top of the bottle - the same way a coke bottle opens when new.

When I gotv my Furby ,I couldn't any compatablr oil - so I headed off to my local VW dealer -to find it priced well below that in local Halfrauds ( well if you could find any) .
