Problem with a Wheel Bolt

Featured Replies

How best can I remove a wheel bolt on my son's car which just keeps turning? Also is the problem likely to be the bolt itself (which is a replacement job) or the axle stub that it bolts into? Many thanks.

Keeps turning?

What size socket are you using?

Have the others come out ok?

Yes it just keeps turning and the others are OK. Don't know the socket size but it is the one that fits the wheel bolts. I need to get it out now as it will be too late if my son has a puncture - trying to get it out on say a motorway will be a nightmare. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm guessing then it must have been over tightened and stripped the threads. Until its out I don't know what the damage would be, probably need a new wheel bolt and bearing I'd say.

I'd try removing all the other bolts then spinning the damaged on whilst applying pressure to the wheel.

Steel-wheel or alloy-wheel?

If steel : just weld a socket onto it.

If alloy : just weld a socket onto it (very carefully with a funnel around it).

Hopefully, Tech1e's tip works so you don't need to weld.

I'm assuming it's not rounded and that it's thread damage.

Also assuming its not the locking wheel bolt either.

Its not the locking wheel bolt. The wheel is an alloy but I don't have the ability or equipment to weld. Any other suggestions please?

If its just turning it sounds like the threads a goner only thing i can think off is to drill it out then re tap the hole and get a new bolt but that might be a bit drastic

If the thread has gone then you should be able to pull it out with the wheel.

It's going to need a new bearing so might as well take it to a garage.

other option is to drill it out and run on 4 wheel nuts(assuming its a 5).would still pass a mot but not ideal.maybe just till you get booked into a garage

Use the wheel to pull outwards, taking care not to pull the car off the jack, and continue to unscrew the bolt.

I agree with one person pulling the wheel away from the car and another turning the bolt you ought to get the bolt out regardless of whether it is the bolt, the thread or both that are damaged.

However I would not rely on just the supplied car jack or anything similar to support the car.

Chock at least two other wheels and either use a jack with a large base area or position wooden blocks to support the car should the jack move.

axle stand is much safer !

If you've never removed the bolt before and it's a brand new car, then it's unacceptable. I'd get the dealer to sort it.
