At the 2009 edition of the Geneva motor show, the Skoda Yeti crossover SUV was acknowledged as one of the neatest production cars. The Yeti catapults the VAG-owned Czech brand into a new market segment. However, the development of the Yeti within the group has been unprecedented as Skoda engineers have used some unusual methods to make it a cost-effective project.

Skoda engineers basically based the project on the Octavia platform with shorter front and rear overhangs and introduced a completely new upper structure and revised Haldex four-wheel drive system with some important differences.

Traction control system has been added to reduce slip when going up and down hills, and the car has higher ground clearance and a steeper front ramp angle. Although a Tiguan or Q5 platform might have helped, but Skoda wanted its own version with a lower roof, smaller profile and tailored for efficiency. Currently, the car is sold in Europe, India and there are plans for making it in China in 2013.

Meanwhile, Skoda is planning to go on an aggressive expansion mode, especially in the rapidly growing SUV market in emerging markets. This could result in the company splitting its next generation Yeti into two separate models -- a five-seater SUV on the lines of the Volkswagen Tiguan in 2015 and a seven-seater SUV of the size of Volkswagen Passat expected with a 4WD option due to come in 2016.

Skoda India head, Thomas Kuehl, told some journalists that the Yeti’s poor acceptance in India was due to its size and indicated that the carmaker was working on a bigger looking model for the next generation of the Yeti. The current Skoda Yeti model is schedule to arrive in ME in early 2012

If I'm not mistaken, the bigger picture is a photoshopped version of the new Skoda corporate face on a VW Tiguan body and the lower looks like a photoshopped version of a Ford C-Max.

Not sure I'd be buying eithe of these in 2015, but the basic sentiments are probably right.
