using GT TDI mkIV driveshaft in a fabia?

Featured Replies

So... Does anyone know if the 6 speed driveshafts in the mk4 Golf platform (same 02M box/engine etc) are the same more or less as the fabia vRS? Looking at a decently priced 6 speed driveshaft from a PD150 (1J0 407 272 part number) and wondering if it will fit in my car as well? Hmmmm

if it matters its the longer offside shaft I am thinking of.

I'd have though it'll fit the box itself but possible be too long, does the golf not have a wider track?

does the golf not have a wider track?

This might dictate the answer to be honest. I doubt it is massively wider, if at all?

Golf mk4 - 1513 mm

Fabia mk2 - 1416 mm

I don't find anything about mk1, but I think it's the same.

If there is only 12mmm difference in track width I'd give a try Jason. You'd be surprised how much tolerance there is on the inner cv joint, the 100mm inner joints have about 60mm of travel available on the tripod and in some cases you can reverse certain washers or spacers or change the order they are fitted to hide or gain a few millimetres, believe it or not the length of the driveshafts are actually not all that critical, so long as they are roughly right and the inner joints don't bind up at the shortest setting (minimum droop) then they will be fine.

The other thing to bare in mind is that you may have to change the outer cv joint for a fabia one, again there may be some trickery pokery you can do here.

Failing that have you tried a 5 speed one on there? I bet they aren't that different tbh.

The post above yours suggests it is closer to 100mm though. Never tried a 5 speed one as always assumed they were too long due to the narrower 5 speed gearbox. I was hoping the CV joints would be the same too really :D

the spacing between the driv flanges on most of the 5 speed gearboxes is the same, the differential is in the same relative position on the 6 speeder and it's offset towards the passenger side, ie the drives side (long shaft) is the same length, the passenger side (short) is slightly shorter than the 5 speed one.

I think you misinterpret what I said about the 100m joints, they are commonly referred to as 100mm diameter Inner joint, some of them are interchangeable with other vag models

Golf mk4 - 1513 mm

Fabia mk2 - 1416 mm

I don't find anything about mk1, but I think it's the same.

Looking at the back of the technical data booklet, the track on the mk1 is 1435mm to centre of the tyres.

I might just go for it and see what happens

The reason for it is I have a split CV boot so the driveshaft needs to come out anyway, so I thought about just swapping and then I have a spare driveshaft with a fresh boot & grease.

Any reason for looking at the golf one? Are they any stronger or anything?

Thread resurrection, anybody able to help on this one, are the VRS outer CV joints the same as MK4 Golf TDI (6 speed) ones?

A guy who is making shortened driveshafts for me (MK2 Golf PD150 conversion) uses Fabia outer CVs on shortened Golf MK4 shafts, and VR6 hubs. However I have VR6 hubs too, and had a spare set of MK4 CVs hanging around and test fitted them. The splines on the VR6 hubs fit the outer CVs of the MK4 shafts perfectly. Is there any difference at all, why is he running Fabia outers, when I have 3 full sets of MK4 outers here that I could use. The shafts a re made to his spec as they work perfect, but would be great to find out if the more common VW items would fit the same physically. Cheaper, easier come by and always have spares.

daved here tried to find out, but a blank is drawn.

Cheers for the help
