12v cigarette socket always on?

Featured Replies

I'm not very familiar with car electrics. Does anyone know I it is easy to make the cigarette 12v socket work with the ignition? Mine is always on. I want to add a clock that is backlit via a 12v cigarette socket plug, but don't want it lit up all of the time draining the battery.

As the fag lighter is not in the best position in the Octy I would be inclined to hard wire to the switched live behind the radio.

Both fag sockets are permanently powered.

As above, wire into switched live feed, upgrading that circuits fuse if pushing much extra demand on the wiring.

If you want to keep the fag lighter setup I think you will simply have to remember to pull out the plug from the socket each time you stop....

A back-lit clock must only draw milliamps. However upgrading a fuse on a circuit is never a great ideal just incase the the cable is already close to its maximum current delivery....

I would tap in the feed to the HU as you have both perm & ignition needs there, and it is in the dash which is probably close(ish) to where the clock would be mounted.
