Integra Type R DC2

Featured Replies

Was thinking of going for a mk1 octy vrs but have somehow found myself looking at Integra Type R DC2's.

Always had a soft spot for these and want to get a quick petrol car before it hits £2 a litre at the pumps

Has anyone any experience of these and if theres any common faults with them?

I know the seat bolsters take a bit of a beating and rear wheel arches can rust on any honda of this age(1998).

Also know i'll be taking a big drop in mpg compared to the furby, does anyone have any real world mpg figures for this car?

Have been onto a couple of honda forums for info but thought i'd still ask here as its always been such a knowledgeble forum of all car makes and models.

Thanks in advance

Davie

Visceral, raw, screaming, peaky, angry, bastid of a car.

Love 'em.

Also make sure the VTEC system isn't fecked. Take the car for a run, let it get to temperature and then boot it. At around 5,500rpm it should turn into a nutter. Front suspension can take a beating too. A lot of them get tracked.

It's a brilliant car, probably one of the finest front drivers ever made. Well worth a shot.

Don't expect any more than 33mpg, even babying it the engine uses a LOT of fuel. It doesn't 'need' to be thrashed, but if you want to make good progress you've got ****-all torque (not a hater, I owned a VTEC unit for a good while, I know what they're like).

Also, try and get a UK spec one. Slightly more power. Should be 187bhp.

My advice would be to get a really well looked-after one and run it as a weekend car, if you can afford such a luxury. They're wasted on the day to day run. It'll just **** you off, they're pretty hardcore for a road car.

Sounds like i should like it then :giggle:

Have found one 10 mins from my house so might email the lad tomorrow and go for a wee look.

Sadly my furby would have to go to finance it and it would be getting used as a day to day car.The good news is i work out in a wee village so have twisty windy roads to play on each day :)

You'll love driving it, owning it and the fact it never goes wrong.

You'll hate the fuel consumption. And they tend to like a bit of oil too.

Amazing cars though. If you drive it, it'll haunt you... be careful... it may ruin your Fabia forever!

Have pretty much made up my mind im getting one, just need to sell the fabia and hope local lad will keep his in the meantime. If he manages to sell it,theres always more examples out there.

Ta much for the info Vlad,i'll pop up pics when i get one.

Please do!

And the sound.

Glorious!

Oh, and you'll have double the rev range you have now... thereabouts. Think they're happy to spin to around 8,400rpm or something silly!

lol motorbike revs in a car....fantastic

Have never driven a Type R of any kind so looking forward to it :)

My bro's got an accord type r 2.2 and that thing shifts makes me smile every time v tec kicks in. Was used as a guinea pig for both k&n and mongoose so you can imagine the noise it makes. 232bhp it made on the rollers. B)

Integra wise I'm not a fan of the dc2 looks dated. Got to be a DC5 for me

Mates not long got rid of his civic type r due to poor fuel consumption. Low 20's on a good day. Low teens on a bad day

Oh and look for a jdm spec one not uk, more bhp

Or save your pennies and get the FD2 civic type r

Get yourself on to the itr-dc2.com, there is loads of info on there.

I had a 98 spec import for a year or so, one hell of a car! The imports have more power than the UK spec cars (less restrictive exhaust system I think). The gear ratios are quite short, mine did about 4000rpm at 70mph and there was no sound deadening so much louder in the cabin than the Octavia. Standard suspension is a lot firmer than the Octavia. Fuel economy is similar, on a long motorway run I got 40mpg from the Integra, normal mixed driving was around 30-35.

Common issues:

Rust - even if it's not showing on the outside it's probably under way on the inside.

Gearbox syncros, usually third will go first. Go up and down the gears at high revs to make sure they engage fine. Gearbox oil change with Honda MTF3 is recommended every 2 engine oil changes. Service interval is 6k but a lot of people seem to do it at 4-5k, as the engine revs so high it is important not to use bad/old oil.

Engines burning oil. Look for smoke out of the back when booting it.

Worn engine mounts

Water leaking into the boot, usually through the rear light seals or boot hinges.

Electic aerial failing

That's all I can think of for now, but go and have a search on ITR-DC2.com and you will find more. :)

Edit: forgot to mention the noise is immense! VTEC is at 5800rpm and red line is 8500rpm. I think the limiter is 9000rpm on imports and slightly lower for the UK cars.

My mate has a dc2 import, stripped out, caged track weapon

As said above they are a hell of a track car but not very pratical for road use everyday

Exhaust, manifold, throttle body and a map and the B18C will fly :D have a few mates who have ran buddy club exhausts and they are probably too loud for most but if thats what you're after, they don't get much better :)

It's a funny thing about how they feel - at 30 mph you feel like you want to be in 2nd but actually there's enough torque to be in 4th. From a handling point of view, a strong alternative would be a Lotus Elan.

Just sold an m100 lotus elan, they are similar. Honda is so much more stronger though and not as precise on the steering feedback as the elan. Still a great chassis though!

Thats my old type r from 6 years ago, small world. Can't believe its still going! Pm coming your way!

Unfortunately the image would stop me getting one, plus there not that fast.

I bought a Honda Civic 1.8VTi (170bhp) revved to 8200rpm. I was massively disappointed by it.

A friend of mine never gets more than 24mpg from his 04plate CTR, i would have guessed the integras to be thirstier.

good front wheel drive cars at the time. overtaken by modern cars with superior chassis. Clio 200, Megane R26 etc etc

hehe, i thought my comment would send tempers raging, but apparently not.

Yes was a lovely motor had to sell it needed a five door so moved onto the skoda scence instead i sold it to a chap in germany via the dc2 forum was a fast motor clean dc2

But you speak the truth. Bloody ricers!

It's the JDM that has more power not the UK. I had a JDM 96 spec before my 2nd LCR. Loved it. Still miss it too. Decent set of tyres and a rebushed car and you'll never look back. My one would reach the same speeds on a bridge run as my stage 2 mapped LCR! Such a comtrollable chassis too. My final track session in mine I mistimed a gear change, which as a result was on a bend. Out come was a 120+mph slide. Dab of oppo and full throttle, and it straightened up without a hint of a tank slap. I WILL own another.
