High milage DSG owners?

Featured Replies

Hello again.

I would like to hear if anyone has experience with a high milage DSG? Has i been reliable or has there been any probs (I've read quite a lot about the "Mechatronic-units".

I think the Octavia is a lot of car for your money, however, I'm a little bit worried about this model's reliability (in particular problems relating to the DSG box).

I won't buy til 2013 at the earliest (my current car (for disabled driver) needs to be "phased out" first)), and reliability is very important to me.

The good thing about waiting is that I've read somewhere that the 2013 Octavia will be a hybrid with an electric power plant capable of driving 80 kms before needing a recharge (and top speed will be 120 km/h). I imagine that this will give a great MPG ratio. The bad thing is that a new model is likely to face quite a few recalls in the time of ownership (my current Swift from 2006 has had 3) and I hate recalls.

What do you think?

i Have an 2006 octavia 2.0 tdi, 270 000 kilometers rolled... first gearbox works like new.. cant complain. oils changed every 60 000 kilometers.

Dual mass flywheel changed at 150 000, so far no sounds or vibrations. Maybe this lasts over 200 000 kilometers? Other than this, the gearbox feels very good, me likes :)

My other 2006 oct with same gearbox and engine has been driven 210 000 kilometers. First gearbox works like dream. Dual mass flywheel changed a month ago at 205 000 kilometers. Made annoying noises idling. This was the first flywheel change, now the car is like new :)

So far so good. Do you mind me asking how much it costs to have a flywheel replaced? Anyone with DSG-7 experience?

In finland, 1000-1200€ depending from garage :)

Sold mine at 30k miles after loads of (unresolved) problems. I'll never have another. Back to manual for the new car.

440,000kms on my 6 speed DSG. Had the DMF replaced at 130,000kms under warranty. Mine is a PD140 and has been remapped from new so it has a lot of torque going through the box. It threw a little wobbly a few weeks ago when it went into limp mode (stuck in first) but it reset itself after about 2 hours, thats the only time its ever skipped a beat.

Perhaps my fear of Octies with DSGs been unreliable is unjustified, then. Remapping not something I plan to do.

Would any of you jump on a Octy III (Hybrid) even if it was pretty new? I'm wondering how long one should expect Skoda to be fixing the "growing pains"?

Thing is: my next car will have to be kept for 6 years so whilst the current TSI is probably a tried and tested and tested model at that time, I don't feel I can afford to ignore the higher mpg of a new Hybrid vers. (growing pains or not... :S)

I've a mate at a VAG marque garage and they have had a car come in with a broken DSG box that needs replacing. I was worried at that point expecting a failure but as it turn out the driver hit something left on the motorway in one of the lanes which took the box. Gearbox and related work cost more than the car is worth.

My mate does like to scare me with DSG issues........but in all honesty if it was "that" bad he would have told me to not buy it in the first place.

But it can be expensive if it breaks

I don't think you'll see an Octy 3 Hybrid until at least 2014.

Perhaps not. I just read something about an Octy III Hybrid and thought it was the 2013 model. I may well be wrong though. Considering I'll own the car for at least six years, and the speed with which fuel costs have increased these last couple of years, I think i might be stupid not to get a hybrid as my next car. What do you guys think?

As long as it is a diesel hybrid?

No point in half measures.
