Scraping noise on hard lock

Featured Replies

My car makes a scraping noise when maneouvring with the wheel on hard lock left. Is this normal? What might it be? I have replaced the summer wheels (18 inch) with some 16 inch winter ones about 3 weeks ago. The rolling radius of the latter with its tyres is 0.5% less than the 18 inch plus lower profile tryes. I've only had the car for a month so not sure whether the problem has been there since I bought it or not as I haven't done many hard lock left turns (I was parking it straight on the driveway as my recently-departed Scooby was in the carport to keep it clean!).

I had something similar. Turned out to be the wheel arch liner which had come loose. Maybe that?

Put the car in full lock, turn off the engine, handbrake on, in gear and crawl underneath to see if anything is touching the wheel or fouling the brakes etc.

As above it's normally the wheel arch liner or one of the various plastic panels that has come loose.

Well done - it was indeed the wheel arch liner. But I also had a scraping sound which turned out to be the "brake back plate rubbing on the brake disk". Fortunately a quick and easy fix at my local garage.
