Right ..clutch has had it...advice?

Featured Replies

Right.... I have finally accepted the fact my clutch has gone to the great gearbox in the sky.......... so I will have to get it changed :(

BUT where do I take it?

there is a Mr. Clutch in Swindon....anybody had any dealings with them.

A local garage? there is one that doesn't have any dealership and is cheap and cheerful.

OR should I take the VERY expensive option and go to my Skoda dealer?

The other thing is do you think I will get away with with just the plate or have you had the same thing happen and done something more drastic  ...I know Jabba has started doing upgraded clutches but they are way out of my price range.....plus how long does it take..I know it's a gearbox out job but are we looking at a couple of hours or more? I am expecting

That's unfortunate. I don't suppose if you can find out where the local taxis have work done on their Octavias?

It's worth a try Simon....... I'll see if I can find out

anyone else got any words of wisdom or had a clutch done recently

i was warned away from mr.clutch, told they use a lot of re-manufactured clutch's. i'd go to the one man band myself(i did infact), by the clutch myself and get him to fit it, often just as capable if not more so than a dealer as they have to work on anything rather than a specific few cars and a LOT cheaper, my clutch replacement cost me about

Take it to AMD, you're sure to get a good job there and it will probably cost less than a dealer

Rob, depends if you are in warranty or not and whether you want to replace it with a standard one or an uprated one.

If you want to stay standard, and are in warranty, go to your dealer. Mine was

I think I will have to replace it witha standard friction plate (as they say "times is hard" at the moment) so I may give the dealer a ring and see what he can do next week....strange there was no problem this afternoon but it's not going to tow my caravan in May ...if it starts slipping it just gets worse until it cools down so I am hoping its just the plate.:)

Would love to go the jabba uprated clutch route but the pennies wont let me...maybe next time

I recently went down the route recommended by TaviaRS - upgraded clutch and flywheel from IP and had my dealer fit it, on the basis that they ought to know how to do the job!?!. They quoted me 3.5 hours labour, so if you take the car elsewhere you shouldn't be expecting it to take longer than this.

Not that this'll help Rob, but couldn't a lil box of electronics under the hood be contributing to your clutch slippages?

If you were to remove that, your clutch problems would go away :P

Where would the fun be in doing that  ...I only have to start reversing using the clutch up the driveway and first the revs rise then the pedal hits the floor and then the smoke appears ...and it smells ...let it cool down and drive of without using the clutch to mutch and its fine will try and get it sorted tommorrow ...the rates are a bit high today :(

Remember though that with a caravan you may even want to slip your tyres rather than let the clutch do the work - especially as your engine has been given a little extra ;)

The new clutch needs to settle in a little anyway, I'd try and do a few hundred miles before pulling a caravan again personally but that may not be possible I suppose :(

If only I could afford an uprated clutch from JBS but at around

Perhaps you'd be able to do a finance deal with JBS or something - I have no idea if they do those at all, but it could be saving you money in the long term esp. with your extra torque :)

It's an idea, but I have been off work sick since the start of December and took a loan out to cover that (no sick pay ..only

Rob,

when you say it's clutch slip do you actually get the clutch burning smell?

If not it may be the master/slave cylinder problem...basically the peedle falls to the floor but it ok after you hook it back up with your foot or you go to accelerate and the car just revs until you pump the clutch peedle once.

Boy does it stink and all that white smoke  ...so I am pretty certain it's the clutch .....we have just found someone to put it right for the right price as well ;)
