Cheap FMIC

Featured Replies

I wanted to do before and after dynos on mine but I'm glad I didn't try as I had to have the bumper off half a dozen times over several weeks before it fit.

As long as it's all good quality, which any reasonably competent person can assess, and the pipe routing isn't too convoluted, it can only be an improvement over the standard SMIC.

I'm sure Rob can testify the improvements :)

And then quickly show you a Forge kit for $1,000,000? :giggle:

Nope R tech don't actually stock a FMIC for the VRS

these ebay kits have been tested and showed they they infact had no benifit over the side mount !!! but if you guys want to buy one then do so its your car and your money. you can either listen or not simple !!!

cheap core dont mean rubbish as ive seen cheap ebay cores on a scooby that pushes over 500bhp and it works !!!

These threads seem to come around every 6 months or so lol

I wished they were good as the price of the Forge and pro alloy ones is what's stopping me going stage 2 (I'm a tight fecker)

have you got a link to the test results?

I'm sceptical at best but would like to see the figures

That's what I mean - the kits themselves may be poor (although TelftonTom's had some good experiences with them from what I remember), but if you did the install your self with custom pipework etc it's not going to be any worse that the strange routing in the Forge/ProAlloy ones!

Just waiting for the resident Forge fan club to come on and post a 1,500 word reply on why Forge is good that doesn't actually prove anything, and is actually just full of conjecture and marketing spiel!

B)

There must be somewhere in the region of 100+ Mk1 Octy VRS owners on here I just wish someone would read one of these threads just before they get a cheapo intercooler and be kind enough to have their car dyno'd before and after so we can all see the results, standard SMIC vs eBay FMIC.

All I know from experience is the standard side mount intercooler is not good enough for anything other than a standard car, it seems everyone has to take a gamble when they choose what FMIC to go for at the moment :(

+1  the jury really is out on this some people say yh there good other say save up for a proper one, it seems the jury is out on decent SMIC as well some people say they are better than standard some say worse, however if its bigger than the standard it must have something going for it if its not a cheap arse thing.

I tell you what guys if i ever fit one i shall do a before and after dyno hows that sound? B)

Alex, im sticking mine on the dyno at santa pod but unfortunately i already have the ebay FMIC

Wouldn't even have to go to the expense of a proper dyno either, you could just get someone with VAG-Com and a laptop to log your intake air temps then come back the weekend after and do the same logging after you've fitted the intercooler.

There must be people on the Golf/Seat forums that have tested them surely

we shall do that haha

If anyone reading this thread has got an ebay FMIC or SMIC fitted and a copy of VAG-Com with a laptop can you do some logs of block 004 or block 006 and post the results?

20+ sold.....

Surely SOMEONE on here can varify them?

IIRC it was a SMIC i think?

no it was the fmic, the cheap ones especially have more pipework than needed causing more lag, uprated smic for a small turbo car is the way forward, trust me!

But where can you get a decent smic for good money without going to forge.

Not many places do it , and those that do will charge as much as Forge anyway. The ones that are cheap from what i remember had a worse performance over even the std SMIC so be careful on what you buy..

thats true of all intercoolers, needs to be decently made to work properly.

try eurojet or tyrol sport, forge do them too but its smaller than the other 2 manufacturers that i mention iirc,

Just read that case study about the FMIC and the SMIC.. slightly worrying that the FMIC ran a higher coolant temperature and the knock difference was also quite surprising.

So maybe uprated smic would be better for stage 2's.. Or maybe that's marketing for you :giggle:

indeedy

Nice one Luca... gunna try and have that!

Lets see if this goes down like a lead balloon...

What is it that essentially cripples the SMIC performance when we go to stage 1. Is it the core size, not efficient, not enough air flow?

Whilst reading this thread I had a thought about a few things..

1> upgrade, what if it was upgraded to the TT or leon SMIC? Surely they must be more efficient?

2> If you funnelled the air from the grille directly on to the SMIC

3> What if you relocated the SMIC from the arch to the front of the bumper so more air can hit it.

Are these possible ideas?

1) I think they use twin SMICs, not totally sure but pretty sure.

2) I don't know about the vRS, but on mine if you peep through the left hand lower grille, you can see the intercooler poking out nicely.

3) Good idea..!
