Skoda roof bars - how noisy?

Featured Replies

I've fitted a set of pucker Skoda (Thule) roof bars... Really noisy - anyone esle fitted them with same results?

In my experience with transit van going from Leeds to hull they are a bleeding nightmare!!

High pitch whistle to hull and back, never again!

Mind you they were quite old and newer ones should be better.

Are they the aero bars?

I have the Atera aero bars, with 2 cycle carriers, and they can make a fair bit of noise. But I've found they're all noisy no matter what car they're fitted too.

If the noise is too much you could try the whisper bars. They look pretty good, but not sure how practical they are.

I get a whistle with mine but they are brilliant for when I have my bikes on the roof :)

Do you have the rubber insert in, or are you using the T section?

I find they're not too bad with the rubber in place, but more noisy if i've got the bike carrier on which uses the T section - I normally cover up the exposed /open T slot with a strip of tape which helps.

I find my Atera SIGNO roof bars reasonably quiet with the rubber inserts fitted as above. I haven't investigated whether my Octavia II needs longer bars than my Octavia I. If it does, I might buy Whispbars - unless they cost an arm and a leg.

P.S. I need 120cm bars compared with the 110cm ones I currently have, and £179.85 IS an arm and a leg! The Ateras cost a not insignificant £124.95 in comparison.

The bars on their own will whistle. When additional kit is added(bike holders etc) them this is reduced. Not sure why you would leave bars on on their own as there is a penalty in fuel consumption and only takes a few minutes to put on/remove

I have the Thule Square bars with 2 Thule 951 cycle carriers on, they are quite noisy and whistle when used although the same setup on a mk1 octavia estate didn't whistle :wonder:

I have the Thule Aerobars (same as the skoda supplied ones) and they whistle slightly when nothing is attached but are fine when bike carriers or roof box is on......apart from the obvious increase in wind noise due to the resistance of the stuff on the roof!

I have Thule aerobars, and it makes a big difference if you cover the slots on both the upper and lower faces with either the rubber inserts or gaffer tape.

I have Prorack Wispbars (model S44 that fits between the roof rails as opposed to extending further outwards) and you don't even know they are fitted, admittedly they are pricey (think they were £150 or £160) but you could easily leave them on permanently.

Indeed; I have Thule Aerobars and on their own they are way noisier than the OEM VW bars used on our old Passat Estate. The only way to shut them up is to clamp something to them in the form of a bike carrier, roof box, canoe, whatever...
