Fabia 1.2 HTP 12V - timing belt or chain replacement?

Featured Replies

Hi Everybody,

I'm not much of a motorhead so apologies for what is probably a n00b question :)

I have a Fabia 1.2 HTP 12V petrol (53 plate) that has done about 70,000 miles. It has just been serviced by an independent garage (not Skoda/VAG specialists) and they advised me to check whether the timing belt is due for replacement.

The service schedule makes reference to a "ribbed v-belt" and also a "toothed belt" but not specifically to a timing belt and from what I can gather from searching the forum this engine may actually have a chain and not a belt at all.

Does anybody know which it is, a belt or chain? And if it's a chain, does it still need to be replaced or checked periodically, or should I just leave it be?

Many Thanks!

Im sure the 1.2 (6V & 12V) is chain driven and is supposed to last the life of the engine. (unless youve used oil thats not to spec it should be fine)

You may need to renew the belt that powers the steering/alternator/water pump etc but thats a small job.

1.2 HTP is indeed chain driven.

Tooth belt means timing belt and ribbed belt will be the alternator belt, but as tuscan 30 said the 3 cylinder 1.2 htp engine uses a chain to drive the cam.

The wording in the service schedule book covers the model with the various engines that could be fitted.

And the shocking thing is you trusted your service to someone who can't even tell what it's got even having done the service lol

I was thinking the same...might be worth checking they used the correct oil.
