Shifting to 1st gear at 10-15kmhs?

Featured Replies

hi guys,

I got the FL octavia2 now since a while, its a1.8tsi 6speed manual, i noticed at times when taking a slow speed(15kms) left or right turn i need to shift the car to 1st gear, is that normal & ok?

my hyundai use to take it on 2nd gear the same turn, in the octy i feel the engine will stall or knock, is it ok changing to first gear at 10-15kms?

thanks..

I would have thought that second would have worked, however shifting to first should not break anything. The Octavia is quiet long geared, maybe thats why.

I think its all fine its as has been said longer geared perhaps to your old car you know yourself that its time to change down so it must be but I would still have thought 10mph would have been ok for 2nd prob depends on gradient etc too

Cant say I have ever had to use first gear in mine for anything other than setting off.

What gear is the indicator telling you to be in?

i don't have the gear indicator on my display, well this happens at times when the turn could be abit steep, if i don't gear down to 1st at low speed like 10kmhs before taking the turn the car does judder & almost stalls so i just gear it down & take the turn, i guess the 1.8tsi with 6speed transmission has a long 1st gear..

Thanks..

I have the same engine/gearbox and agree that gearing is long, i.e first needed for very slow turns, first gear goes to 60kph and second gear is over 100kmh, of course a little clutch play in second gear when needed helps, but agree first is needed, but it will not damage anything.

Wife's Toyota Auris 1.6 petrol 5speed has very short gears takes slow bends at 2-3'rd gear easy, but at 140kmh its on 4300 rpm very noisy and painful sounding, while Skoda on 6'th at 180kph is on 4000 rpm.

Well I did a bit off checking out yesterday in mine and it would seam the 10 kph is too slow for 2nd gear.

The gearing on mine Std 1.8 TSi elegance looks to be around 9mph ( SAT NAV ) per 1000 rmp in second gear.

so i guess gearing down to 1st at 10kmhs is fine in the 1.8tsi 6speed manual then..

It has not been a problem on mine for nearly 2 years since new, done about 35.000 miles so far, and has been punished quite a lot.

so i guess gearing down to 1st at 10kmhs is fine in the 1.8tsi 6speed manual then..

I would say yes you would have to.

Never had any problems with mine so I guess it just down to the differant way people drive.

Mine is around 16 months old and Ive done 65,000 miles so far.

I have the same motor and have no problem shifting to 1st at low speed in fact better than my Honda Civic was.
