Vehicle lighting checks ?

Featured Replies

In all honesty, how many of you regulary check all your lights ?

There's so many motorists where I live with 1 headlamp, headlamps completely misaligned, 1 tail/brake lamp etc. I just don't get why people don't check their cars more regulary instead of relying on the 'miracle' MOT once a year. :smirk:

Im an HGV Driver so its habit for me.

I'm probably a little OTT, but I carry some wet wipes to clean the lights on long journeys in the Winter.

I check mine at least twice a week. Also have spare bulbs in the car just in case.Only ones that have gone on the car have been indicators and brake lights..

Every time I go out. (except perhaps the rear fog light)

Every now and then. Indicator flashes fast if one is out, headlight i`d notice straight away and rear lights trigger the bulb out light on the dash. Rear side lights need checking once every couple of weeks though.

I keep trying to check my brake lights but every time I do it they always go off before I get round the back to check..

any who, I often drive late at night or in the early hours so i check mine every couple of days because you kinda stick out like a saw thumb in the early hours so I get hassled by the police quite frequently, always have at least 2 of every type of lamp in the car so i can change them at the roadside if I need to.

Most lights are easy to check when stationary in traffic, you can see the reflection in the car in front/behind.

As I'm driving - using windows/glass/shiny surfaces for reflections. I can usually do this before I've left my road if I need to reverse off the driveway.

Oh and having no rear seats/carpet helps check reverse lights/brake lights/indicators without having to leave the drivers seat lol

Generally check that things look right whenever I switch the lights on. In front of my drive I have a wall to check the fronts and another car behind to check the brakes. I suppose I am guilty at times of relying on noticing a change rather than physically inspecting lights each time.

This time of year when there is a frost I do check the main, dipped, sides and rear lights while deicing the car. Brake lights are always a pain unless you have a verticalish surface behind you.

I seem to remember many years ago driving on the continent that many garages had a large reflective surface on the forecourt which I presume was for easy checking of lights.

Normally once a week I'll do a proper check, along with tyres, oil, coolant and screenwash levels.
