Pickup / fun insurance woes

Featured Replies

Have any of you other pickup or fun owners noticed a sharp increase in insurance premiums this year? I normally shop around etc and I've checked all the usual suspects but I can't actually find a cheaper insurer than my current one even though they had to barefaced cheek to up my premium by another 250 notes again this year on top of upping it by 100 notes the year before. It's kind of like they've all gotten together and covertly upped the cost knowing full well you will have no choice

it's difficult enough as it is to insure a pickup, everybody I've been to has told me I need a commercial van policy for sdp use which I'm happy with and I understand why etc, but the insurance cost is going up folks... All I've done is gain another years no claim discount since last year

What I've discovered is that if say my pickup were a hatchback with exactly the same mods, all declared and legit it would be a quarter of the price to insure it, 99.9% of the time I go round with absolutely nothing in the back so effectively it's just the same as a car but with no roof on the back.. What gives? It's driving me crazy now how can I be more of a risk now than a year ago

something else that one insurer told me is that if it had 4 seats it would be classed as a car which would make it cheaper.

stick an old settee in the back?

Lie about your age?

Persuade some sucker to ram you up the rear, claim some money back?

Have you tried looking at your job? Maybe worth looking at what you do for a living.[honest], and seeing whether you could legitimately identify it under another title?

above might give folks some idea?

Hi Tom, I've been with AutoDirect for around 3 years and although they're a bit crap in some areas and can't communicate for toffee, the one thing they have done is maintain consistent and reasonable premiums year on year so far. If you haven't already done so they may be worth a punt.

My insurer charged me just £10 to add my Fun to the policy last year. Will be gutted if its gone up significantly this year.:-)

Insurance on my Fun went up stupidly last year. My Octy is half the Fun's insurance, more economy, more toys, more power too.

I spent quite some time looking around. All the site sponsers were fairly useless too! 4 seats is meaningless as well as you can get double-cab pickups (L200, Nivara etc)

The reasoning I was given was much the same: commercial vehicle, therefore you *must* be using it as such. No exceptions, not even The Fun. :(

It's now sitting at the back of the driveway, quietly.......

Hi, this sounds all too familier! My old favorit & felly was with Churchill for years but that ended when I bought the fun (commercial).

As it stands my wife pays around half of my annual premium for her fabia, something not right there! Most insurers need to wake up to the fact that in the case of funs the majority simply aren't used as commercial vehicles. Most of the time the back of mine is empty.

As I say the only reason I've stuck with AutoDirect is consistency of premium, but I don't know if I'm paying over the odds compared to other owners? I'm around the £400 mark which to be fair does include a monthly payment arrangement with the associated apr, which is about a 10 to 20% hike compared to the previous year. Would be interested know how I compare & if anyone pays appreciably less who is that with? Cheers, Rob.

Hi, I've posted a response in the new members section. I'd say at 18 with no NCD you're likely to be hit fairly hard even for a pick up. My lad is 19 and pays £2000 + for a 1994 mk 3 Golf! Most of the other cars he checked out were dearer. However, it's worth a try and I wish you all the best with it. Rob.

PS- Your metal working/welding skills might prove invaluable on the pick up!

ok thanks rob. iv seen that they rust on the bonnet jam and raer arches is that right?

my fiat premium is £4800 per year alot i kno:s

sky insurance thanks i will be in toiuch shortly

I insured my fun with direct line with no problem at all it was £30 more than the L&K but still only £220 fully comp, I found most other insurers were double that at the time tho.

i have used compare sites and they seem to be up in the thousands. i think it silly because it being two seater i cant drive like a loony full with kids? pumping music so should be lower risk.

adrian flux seems to always pop up but i hear there no better.

if directline is what a few have used ill call them.

is yours a van policy?

Hi, yes rust wise on arches (+inner), sills, pick up bed etc. Crazy premium but I'm not surprised having helped my son to gain insurance. Best of luck with it mate.

thanks rob it seems that they rust where the bed meets the cab too :(

i suppose it will drop price one day.

ill keep trying to get cheaper this time it just annoys me that they ask all the info and say they dont insure the vehicle or you are to young bla bla bla i just hate being tarred with the same brush :(

I tried Direct Line a while back and they were a fair bit dearer than my current insurer. That seems to be the trouble, what's cheaper for one isn't necessarily so for the other, even if circumstances aren't too dissimilar? I might just give them another shout however to check. Thanks.

Hi, I appreciate how bloody frustrating it must be for you insurance wise and I've expressed my views more than once on the site about the current young driver approach. Unfortunately you can largely blame some of your demographic for providing the reason for insuring risk to the level they now do! If I could go back to your age (I wish!) I'd probably compromise, run something around that I could reasonably afford but didn't necessarily want & build up that all important NCB. Like I say to my lad, hang in there!

Just seen this buddle to the surface......

something else that one insurer told me is that if it had 4 seats it would be classed as a car which would make it cheaper.

Really? 'cos when I was looking to insure The Fun, 4 seats on a pickup meant nothing except a higher premium.

Hmmm, when I did that last year, either the quote was stupidly high or you couldn't insure The Fun as it was classed as a double-cab. (Which kinda flies against what Tom was told about 4 seats.)

Ideally if The Fun hasn't sold, I'd love to have it on a limited milage policy just for the summer, as a head-turner. Maybe if the money-grabbing insurance companies realised that not all people with pickups use them comercially................ah well, stand more chance of winning the Lotto, without a ticket.

Second that. If you extend that logic then perhaps cars towing those small trailers should also be classed as commercial! It's only recently my local council waste site started allowing pick up's in, as previously I had to park outside and carry everything into the site. Infamy, they've all got it in for me!

HA! just tried Sky Insurance on line quote system - HOPELESS! it did not have a social domestic or pleasure use only "carry own goods" and wanted carrying capacity in tons and gross weight in tons its a car based pick up it cant carry tons maybe 1/4 of a ton.

if I can be bothered I may call them tomorrow...
