Fabia Engine Swap?

Featured Replies

I've been very pleased with my nearly new Fabia Estate (1.4 100bhp petrol engine) until I had a drive in a similar car with the 1.9 TDI engine. It has the same bhp but nearly twice the torque and the difference was really huge. Which made me think - how much would it cost to buy a new diesel engine, and would I get anything PX for the petrol engine? I'm sure it wouldn't be economic to trade in the car for a new diesel car because of the initial loss of value of a new car.

I doubt it could be done for cheap...

Considering its a petrol to diesel it would cost loads!

Sell the Petrol, but a diesel and get yourself a new car in the process :)

Woudn't it also need the Gear Box as well as the engine ?

With the heavier engine, uprated suspension ?

So it definately wouldnt be cheap.

Not a bad project tho :)

Also tank, fuel lines, ecu, not worth it

I'd go for that too - sell your current one, get a diesel one. I'd check out the different turbodiesel options as well. The vRS is the most torque-rich of the lot, and it has the six-speed gearbox. I've not personally driven the 1.9 SDI but no doubt it's pretty fast too :D

WW_VRS means the TDi like me, which is ok. The SDi though is just 64bhp and meant to be very sluggish.

A friend of mine has the SDi with a boot. IHave been in it as a passenger, externally it looks ****** horrible.

It gets to 60 eventually :) , is a little cracker for Motorway cruising, and excellent economy, with the motorway work he does.

If you're not interested in speed, but would like the economy, it would be a good choice.

Soz yep I meant TDI - and I seem to remember they can be remapped up to near stock-vRS levels, although I'm not sure if the rest of it would cope :)

TDI has about 30 bhp more or something doesn't it, plus a fair bit more torque?

You're three days early for an April Fool! :) :) :)

If you're serious, forget it - besides the horrendous cost, your warranty will be void and you might well have trouble insuring a substantially modifed car.

Thanks guys. It was just a thought after I was impressed with the diesel car.

I didn't think the insurance would be a problem because it would just be the same af the standard diesel car.

I'll forget it!

Yes but your modifying your current engine, insurers arent necessarily bothered what performance gains it has - they class it as an "engine modification" and a "performance" one at that since you are technically going to have more torque etc than your car so your premium would IMO more than double.

As said before, sell your 1.4 and buy a 1.9 TDi, they can be sourced for around 6k on Ebay with a fair spec (100 bhp edition).
