Battery-top ground gone, any other likely suspects?

Featured Replies

So I started getting engine-rev based interference through my new speakers & sub last week. I spent a couple of hours double-checking all my audio connections and concluded they were fine, then 2 minutes on here led me to suspect the ground lead in the battery-top fuse box. Sure enough it's gone all grey, but at least the box hasn't melted :p

The local auto electrician confirmed that my ICE install wasn't the problem and is replacing that dodgy lead this afternoon. He's also going to check all the other grounding points while he's there, all for the princely sum of £30-£40

He did say it may have died due to carrying the extra load of a failing earth elsewhere in the car / engine bay. So I'm just wondering if I can point him in the direction of any other likely suspects, or is that the only weak one? :wonder:

The cable is known for going bad due to the crimp on the end in the fuse box. So replacing the cable should sort it.

Cheers for that

Can't wait to get the audio fired up again, I've been running to the sound of silence for almost a week now :S

I just got to the auto-electrician's place and the main man (that wasn't there Friday), came over and said "You're gonna need a new cable from Skoda mate. Come back when you get the part, yeah? Might as well get a new fuse box while you at it."

So thanks for the guide, I may well need that if I'm feeling brave enough to connect it all up :S

I very nearly went to Griffin Mill to order the parts as they're 10 minutes away, but then I remembered their reviews from here

Right, who's the best to call to get my parts ordered and delivered?

TPS or VW , Skoda dealer

Cable is around £40+

Fuse box around £50+ if you are going to replace the lot.

Thanks for that, had the car 4 months and haven't needed a single thing before now

Maybe I'll give Griffin Mill a chance to quote on these simple parts, as long as they don't physically touch my car it should be okay :p

Prices so far from SkodaParts.com: Alternator Lead £43, Fuse Plate (just the bottom of the fuse box) £52 delivered. I think the fuse box is okay as the lid's not melted, so I'll just go for the lead.

Waiting for a price from Griffin Mill, they've emailed some drawings to help pin down exactly what I need
