Hi Guys and Ladies :)

So ive had the car a week now and from what ive been reading, this is quite common on the rears, so had a look and the inners on the rear tyres were definitely worn, took it to drury lane in oldham on manchester road (after reaidng some recommendations on here) and they did say they have had a lot of skoda's come in to re align the rears.

The left rear was something like -2 while the right rear +1 (approx), he adjusted this and also adjustred the thrust angle

The droning has gone on high speeds but the car feels heavy when driving on the motorway?

Ive got some graphs which he printed out for me, ill stick them on when i get home

Any thoughts? And does anybody have the correct revised alignment for a 07 octy mkII VRS TDI 170?

Thank You!!!

You're asking for the settings AFTER you've had them done? :wonder:

I would expect any competent alignment centre would already have the correct settings and will have used them. TBH anything is going to be better than -2 one side and +1 on the other.

If the car has been out for some time you may find your rear tyres are already shagged.

If you haven’t had the tyres changed after the new alignment you may find the reason for the heavy handling is due to the now uneven tread wear you’re rolling on

Hope this helps :)

How much did it cost for the rears to be aligned? I had my front ones done a while ago, but didn't consider getting the rears done!

well it was £48 for the checking and £20 for the adjustment, including vat, it came to £72

Ah so the heavy steering wheel is due to the uneven wear on the bakc tyres... the rears are both 1.6mm so do need changing

Any recommendations on cheap but good tyres? vredesteins are £100 a piece btu ive found some fullruns 225/40/18 for £99 for 2 fitted

Any other options?

I love my Falken FK452s, around £80 a corner IIRC. :)

Got Falken 452's on my vRS petrol in 18" fitment and seem good tyre

Well here are the results, let me know if it looks "right" :)

They look bang on to me - they did a great job on mine at Drury Lane.

They could be very slightly adjusted to the centre of every setting, but 2 hours later probably wouldn't have got you any better than that.

Ive also replaced the rear tyres as it was mega affectig my fuel economy after the alignment! 48 on the motorway down to 41! couldnt believe it,also the fron right tyre developed a slow air leak somewhere

Anyway, bought 2 vredesteins, put them on the rears and put then at the front and the fronts on the back, the air leak was a fauly valve, replaced that for free and now my steering is light again, fuel economy is back up and the handling is Awesome!

£200 well spent!

Sound about right on price.

We do checks for free but adjustment isnt :D. Front toe only £30+vat so your £72 sound right for this job. Looks like you were toe-out so inner wear is not a supprise. They did good - as long you happy - thats what matter.

Low air in one front tyre will have been contributing to the heavy steering - although the worn rears won't have been helping.

Just for reference, you should have your new tyres on the rear apparently. Although this isn't what I do, it is recommended that on FWD cars the tyres with the most tread should be on the rear.

PROBLEM!!!

Just nipped out to do some shopping, went on the dual carriageway, got to 40mph and the car is wobbling all over the place!!! And it gets worse as you get quicker!

the new tyres are on the front and they did balance them, could it be they havent done it properly or am i looking at a possible buckled alloy which was on the rear and didnt notice until it was put on the front?

Help!

Or a wheel nut that is loose!

You need to get that checked out sharpish - does it feel like a vibration through the steering or a wobble of the whole car?

It isn't inconceivable that cheap stick on balancing weights have come off either.

  • Author

nope, just checked the bolts and they are all tight,so is the only other possibly balancing gone wrong?

Its definitely not a buckled alloy is it? i mean, if it was buckled,i wouldve noticed even if they were on the rears correct?

If that problem has only occurred after fitting fresh tyres, then go back to the fitting garage and get them to look at it.

If it wasn't doing this after the alignment changes, then I'd go along with the theory that they haven't balanced the wheel correctly.

Well finally got it sorted, after close inspection this morning,it appears the lead had fallen off one of the wheels, they had not cleaned the alloy and stuck it on the dirt

I didnt bother taking it back theere, had a local garage i normally take it to, they washed the car, took the wheel of and washed it from the inside and then put the leads on properly

Shoddy work, couldnt believe it,next tim eill buy the tyres off them and fit them elsewhere

Took it for a little belt down the dual carriageway,no wobbling at all,Thank Heavens for that! :)

Thank You everybody!!!

No probs - glad you are sorted and it wasn't anything serious.

Not cleaning the rim before sticking weights on is indeed shoddy work - I have had the same happen to me and will never go back to that place again.

Anyone in the M1 J30 (Chesterfield) area need somewhere for tyres PM me or see this thread. Say Andy (cousin) recommended you to go there. And Ian does clean the rim before sticking on the balancing weights, and makes sure they are balanced to read 0.00, not just somewhere near enough like some places!

Glad you're sorted. I'd be minded to ring the original fitting garage and tell them the outcome, that you've had it sorted elsewhere and that you won't be using them again.

Might improve service for people using them after you, at least...

The other garage i took it to had a worker that used to work there and this was the reason he left,as soon as he saw the balancing,he knew it was them
