1.8 TSI SE Pricing/Engines?

Featured Replies

Hi.

I've been looking around at nearly new Yetis and in my search I looked at the Skoda UK website for the spec of different models. I was in particular looking for the differences between the 1.8 TSI SE & SE Plus models and I'm a little puzzled to see that the SE Plus version (£20,440 OTR) is cheaper than the SE (£20,485 OTR). Apart from the additionalal kit in the Plus, the only other differencece seems to be that the engine in the Plus is 152PS as opposed to 160PS in the non Plus version. Having looked at the engine specs there seems to be little difference between the engines other than the slightly lower maximum power. Is there some other difference between these models that I'm missing that accounts for the OTR price 'anomaly'? Any info appreciated.

You could say that you're "non-plussed" by the situation.....

I'll get my coat and leave immediately.

Naughty step!!

NOW!!!

Sorry OP, but I can't help you, but I'm sure someone will be along who can soon.

Welcome by the way.

The 152 engine was I believe developed for the Russian market to take lower octane fuel. The SE plus trim is in reality a Yeti Family Edition; the only one of a small number of European available Edition models to make it to the UK. Also remember in Europe the 1.8 is generally noticeable cheaper than the diesels, think it was a surprise to some that the 160 version was priced in the middle of the diesel range (4x4) over here. The pricing of the 152 sort of addresses that discrepancy.

Was discussing this very subject with one of the sales guys at the local dealer recently; they now rarely sell an SE unless it's a Greenline as the Plus makes much more sense.

Hi.

Thanks all for your helpful replies. :D

Cheers - Y

I raised the price anomaly with a very knowledgeable dealer (yes, there are a couple) when the SE Plus was launched. He said he understood the Russian engine was cheaper to manufacture.

Having looked at the engine specs there seems to be little difference between the engines other than the slightly lower maximum power.

Well, that's what the naming of the two engines suggests, but it can't be quite right. The SE Plus with supposedly 152PS is quoted as having a top speed 1mph higher than the SE with supposedly 160, which would be impossible if the SE Plus produces lower maximum power (since they have the same gearing).

What differs is that the so-called 152PS engine has had its output measured at lower rpm: it is said to develop (at least) 152PS all the way from 4,300 to 6,200. Whereas the so-called 160PS engine claims (at least) 160 from 4,500 to 6,200. This is, as near as makes no difference, the same engine: an engine that is developing 152 at 4,300 is certain to be developing a few more bhp at 4,500.

These differences, then, could be accounted for by nothing more than choosing to draw a horizontal line across the same power curve at a slightly different point, taking in a wider rev band under the curve. If we chose, we could call it (say) a 100PS engine, but with 100PS available all the way up from somewhere such as 3000rpm.

Alternatively, if there really is any actual difference between the two engines' bhp curves, it could be due to a slight change in the electronic engine map, made in order to cope with the worst case of lower-octane fuel but still allowing the engine to produce full power when the fuel is better.

To sum up, the two engines have the same quoted torque, power outputs that would probably be the same if they had been quoted at the same rpm, and the two cars have top speeds within 1mph of each other. Unless and until some tuner comes up with the two engines' torque and power curves superimposed on each other, I think we have to assume the 152PS engine is not less powerful than the 160.

Indeed. I am sure they are mechanically identical and the only differences are in the mapping, or maybe not even in that. I wasn't disputing that there is little difference between them, rather suggesting there may be none at all, perhaps not even in power characteristics, and certainly not in max power.

I have no idea whether there may be some taxation or other technical reason for quoting a different power figure for some markets-it has certainly been known in motorcycle sales.

The SE Plus is cheaper because whilst the spec is much better, any prospective owner will be forced to tolerate some pretty awful cloth trim. :giggle:

Both my wife and I prefer the look of the SE+ seating material to that in our previous SE (think we may be on our own on this :wonder: ); mind the leather is even better :)

Nope, not on your own, I also agree with this. Overall, the leather is great though but id so much have rather been able to spec the alcantara option on my elegance when i ordered it.

Also like the Alacantra from a visual prospective but the leather seams the more straight forward to look after from a practical sence.
