Mileage achieved on who's tyres ?

Featured Replies

B) I did post this once but I cannot find it now, I have an Octavia Scout and my original tyres are getting low, Dunlop sp sport 01,225/50/R17 94W, It looks as though I could get about 25,000 or 3 years motoring out of a set of tyres, do tyres nowadays have softer compounds as you could normally get 40-50 tho out of a set, and all 4 of mine are wearing at the same rate (4x4) which is going to work out expensive. What would be a good mileage tyre for a Scout and what have people had out of theres ? cheers - Stuart

30-35k on both Octavia and a Mondeo on Michellin Primacy HP's.

Much.better than the continental rubbish the Sharan shipped with - feels like driving on ice.

40-50k from a set? LOL!

Max i have ever got from fronts is 25k on Michelin Primacy HP's on my Bora when i had it......on 95k now and haven't been able to get 25k since....I think the manufacturers must get slightly different spec tyres to what we can buy!

Also on the Bora i got 50k out of the rear tyres and still had prob 3-5k left in them but i had a puncture in one so replaced them both at the same time to save hassle.

Continetal sport contact 2 on the Octy. I swopped the fronts to the back at around 20k, so the rears (previously on the front) had to be changed with 3mm of tread due to an unrepairable puncture in one tyre at 38k. The fronts (previously on the rear) have now done 41k and have about 4mm of tread left.

Bridgestones on the previous Octy did about 35k

:'( Somebody on the last thread only got about 10-12 tho out of the front, mind you it was a VRS so there was a bit of power there, but I would have thought Mitchellin have a good reputation for mileage (or did have). cheers - Stuart

I've only had 11½k out of the OEM tyres on my Octavia, they were at the 3mm legal limit.

It depends so massively on your driving style and critically, type and length of journey. If someone is doing 100 miles a day and 90% of that is motorway they'll get huge mileage out of tyres compared with someone who does short city/urban journeys and goes round a lot of roundabouts quickly etc etc. The difference in the amount of 'work' the tyre does per mile is huge.

But my average would be around 12-15k out of a 'sports' tyre (Toyo T1-R etc etc). Mainly because I would buy a tyre based on grip and performance, rather than longevity.

Which brand? That's shockingly bad unless driven hard the majority of the time.

I was always told you should easily get 20k from your tyres.

The OEM Bridgestones.

I do mostly short trips in & out of town and over the damned awful Surrey roads.

That's even worse! Should be getting much more.

I assume you won't be buying them again!

Very strange for Bridgestones. The one set I used, Turanza ER300 appeared to have granite in the compound they wore that slowly! As a result the road handling, feedback and grip from them was woeful.

Any taxi drivers around as there are a few Octavias being driven around Manchester ? they are being driven around town all day so what do they fit ? I thought the legal limit was 1.6mm ? cheers - Stuart

Legal limit is 1.6mm, but you don't really want to be driving around with them near that limit. Plenty of tests and evidence to back that up.

And I have the feeling taxi drivers will place price above everything else when it comes to tyres. I may be wrong, it's just a hunch....

I had 2,7mm left on the Bridgestones on the front and the grip on them wasn't very good, the garage had picked up on them being low so I got rid of them.

Replaced them with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's which I got from BlackCircles.com for £220 fully inc, these are so quiet.

Most taxi drivers get the cheapest available in my experience lol the Chinese brands last forever lol

I got 10k out of the kumhos fitted in may, even wear patterns and tracking spot on! My own fault for choosing them I had them on my old car and they wore roughly the same last time I go by price should of stuck with Falkens lol

I got approx 45k out of some Michelin Exalto Pilot 2's, just changed them even though they were still legal for Michelin Pilot Sport. They weren't cheap but I'm planning on keeping the car for a few more years yet and will hopefully get a similar life from them!

Got the OEM Dunlops on my MK2 vRS and have just ticked past 19k... Still legal although they are close to being changed out of necessity. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

What you going for next Damo?

I normally swap tyres around when I change them so new ones on front. The only pair that I've kept on the front were Toyo T1-R that lasted 14k miles, which for them is pretty good.

Recently I replaced my rear tyres, Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 that lasted 30k miles, although they were only on the front for about the first 8-10k miles.

I can't fault the Dunlops so probably the same again... As the saying goes; the only thing that keeps you on the road. 19k and lots of grip, suits me :)

Got 45k out of Michelin Primacy sports on the front. Just changed them for some Primewell budgets, grip seems really good in wet or dry but they are noisy buggers :S :S

I managed 900 miles out the Kumho v70's. Worth it for the grip though!

 You got 900 mls from a set of tyres :( what were you doing drag racing ?

The V70 is a trackday tyre. So that's a pretty good going wear rate really....
