After Market Cruise

Featured Replies

I looked at Vrs in a dealer showroom which had cruise fitted. Looks like a simple replacement left stalk and presumably the wiring must all in place to take either version ? I asked the dealer who was not aware of a dealer fit option to retro-fit cruise.......................anyone looked into it properly yet ? Its only a small mod but it does make all the difference on those long boring motorway trips, so I would like to add it to mine if possible.

Hi, it is quite a simple mod yes. Big K offers it for

It's not that a big job to do it yourself...which is what I've done on three occasions now, and the dealer was happy to Vag-com the car to accept it FOC.

There is a website that shows it being done step by step if you want the details???

Stupid question but does it screw your warranty?

Stupid question but does it screw your warranty?

It didn't on any of the car's I have done it on because the parts are standard VAG parts and even SEAT were happy with the install and didn't quibble about warranty issues when other bits failed on the Leon (or lay-on its side as I call it!) :(

I'm about to fit it on mine this week (Weather Permitting), I'll try and take some step by step photo's.

I did a bit of research on it and read many of the Golf/Bora 'How To's', but they are a fair bit different from what I can see. SWMBO's car has it from the factory and I had a good poke around that on Friday.

There is a Fabia specific explanation here http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/poloforum/viewtopic.php?t=10966

Much better to get one of our associated techies to fit...plus Briskoda gets a donation.

Will PM you with details once I've confirmed some bit 'n pieces.

There is an interesting description of how car air bags inflate here. The price of a replacement driver's one for the Fabia - should it be needed - is

I was led to believe that the usual 'fitters' had retired.

Urban myths are always funny
In your job you surely must have seen injuries caused by airbags operating in RTAs?

From the site, yes, but there are ways and means of contacting them...after all the KK is a Briskoda package per se. ;)

If anyone is interesed in KK...PM me and I'll give you details etc.

Cheers.

Three? On Fabia's?

They aint the same as the Leon/Octavia.

Nope, sorry, I haven't seen any injuries caused by airbag deployment.

I have seen injuries caused by people not wearing seatbelts and relying on the airbag only

Now that IS a recipe for disaster :(

The worst one I have seen, although we can only conjecture at the sequence of events but it seems logical, and it was upheld by the Procurator Fiscal;

Ford Focus, travelling at speed along a single carriageway overtakes a lorry.

A lorry coming the other way enters the scene and hits the front offside of the Focus.

We believe that (due to paint marks etc) the lorry hit the Focus at the "A" pillar, shearing it from its anchor point in the roof and forcing it into the cab.

Airbag deployed forcing unrestrained driver back into the seat (headrest removed) breaking several vertabrae.

Focus then spun into the path of the lorry it had just overtaken and was "touched" into the path of a small wall.

The Focus was halted by the small wall.....the airbag had deflated by this time.

Deccelaration forces threw the (unrestrained) driver forward and he was impaled by the fractured "A" pillar through the right side of his skull.

The accident was survivable as the car bore witness to.

The airbag deployed properly.

The "A" pillar design is a bit suspect in that it "let go" so easily.

It's a long way around of saying that I have never seen airbags cause injury (although I was fooled initially at that incident/ I thought that somehow the airbag had malfunctioned)

A slight word of caution - fitting of cruise was not successfully carried out on my colleague's August 2004 build car, though the reason why may now have been determined...

Can you enlighten us then David? Was it not being able to switch it on with VAG-COM?

He drove 200 miles to Big K but when fitted it didn't work. Check out http://www.briskoda.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17755
I believe that 2004 cars onwards must to be hooked up to a dealer's VAS 5051/2 diagnostic computer for cruise to be enabled, whereas cruise on earlier cars can be enabled with the older 1551/1552 diagnostic computer or with VAG-COM software.

I've been doing a bit of scratching around on some of the german sites. There is a lot of info but translation is not my strong point!!

Looks like there was a change to the loom from mid 2004. I've got some more diagrams which I will compare to SWMBO's car when I get time.

Not as simple as first thought! Shame as i was considering it, but wanted you to go first Stu! Sorry mate. But then again you would know what you were doing the second time around :davo:

Good to know I'm the guinea pig for your ideas Ken :D Your PDC sensors arrived this morning

I'm not sure if it's a significant step forward but I've managed to enable CC on my car with VAG-COM.
