Spare wheel options (again)

Featured Replies

We just ordered a Yeti for my wife with the spare wheel option. The plan is, as i understand many have done, to remove the spare wheel kit and floor, then replace them with the regular floor and insert to reclaim the extra space. That would give us the wheel and the tools for £75 which is something of a bargain

We'd then load the spare and the tool kit in the boot for long trips and leave it out for the 80% of her milage which is short trips less than 20 from home.

However I'm starting to think that a better bet would be forget the spare wheel option and buy the tool kit and a regular Spitberg Alloy and tyre to use as a spare. As she keeps her cars for 8-10 years there is a 100% chance that both will be need at some point. Any ideas as to what this would cost and any obvious flaws in the plan?

I bought the spare wheel but have taken it out and I also bough a spare 7J x16" wheel and had a full size winter tyre fitted (215/60R16). I also bough the boot floor and polystyrene filler insert. I have put the pare shell in a wheel bag bought off eBay and had a special webbing strap made by Nomad Webbing to hold the spare wheel in the vertical position. You need to tie the spare wheel down to stop it being thrown forward in an accident and killing you!! Lying the full size wheel down on the boot floor takes up too much space.

The times I have need the spare wheel have almost always been within 20 miles radius of home. Spare spitzberg will cost around £160 plus tyre at around £150, plus tools.

I have just been quoted these prices;

Steel wheel with tyre fitted (195x60xR16) £136

Toolkit with boot floor and storage boxes £120

Spitzberg Alloy wheel without tyre £153

I don't know if the alloy wheel fits under the new boot floor instead of the slightly narrower steel wheel!

If it doesn't where would you put the alloy when you've just had to fit the steel spare?

You have to leave the alloy wheel in the boot. It won't fit under the floor

So if you have a "spacesaver" spare in a a fully laden car and you've had to change there is nowhere to put the wheel you've removed?

PS. Doh! I have not had to change a wheel for over 30 years, so thats probably been the case for the last few cars I've had with alloys. Its certainly something to bear in mind for the future.

spare wheel and false boot floor is a snip at £75 especially as most other skoda yeti options are pretty pricey.

I have an aversion to boot floors below the level of the tailgate. So much easier to lift heavy things in and out when its level.

granted you loose out on boot height but the storage boxes around the spare wheel are priceless.

As others have said most punctures occur close to home so the 50mph spare wheel restriction shouldnt be to much of an issue.

Yes the standard 17" sports wheels do fit under the floor in a fashion.

However the wheel sits proud of the top of the boxes but Skoda have catered for this by having a fold line along the front edge of the false floor cover;

Effectively the false floor lifts up an inch or so to sit on the tyre.

Living on the Wolds I have the spare and always carry it but also bought the compressor and gunk as a double back up (something like £25 from ebay) as I tend to travel long distances by road for my hols.

My Yeti is still on order and I have opted for no spare wheel. The other day I got a puncture in the car I was borrowing and only noticed it at home (this car had a space-saver (the actual space-saver type, rather than a slightly smaller steel wheel) but I was thinking that in the future I might find a spare wheel of one sort or another and keep it in the garage; it would have worked perfectly for my recent puncture experience and, as stated, most happen near home anyway, so a call to t'other half and a short wait and you have a spare delivered to wherever you are. Better than no spare at all, even if not perfect cover.

I bet punctures happen closer to home because you/we are more often closer to home,

So really you could get a puncture anywhere but always when its most inconvenient! :giggle:
