Exhaust system warning light that won't go out

Featured Replies

I have an Octavia 1.6 FSI classic (2006). The exhaust system warning light came on and I took it to my local garage who I've used for years. The diagnostics told them it was the EGR valve and they replaced it and cleared the light. The next day after driving 35 miles or so it came back on. I returned it to the garage and the car diagnosed the same problem. They cleaned the inlets and outlets and reset the light. Next day after similar mileage it came back on. It went back for a third try and the same thing happened. Everyone is at a loss as to why this is happening. Any ideas anyone?

Hello, probably catalyst generating problem, pls chk.

Don't know much about the FSi engine, though had similar on a Fabia. A dealer had fitted a new EGR valve and the light came on, customer came to us and we had to adapt it through the diagnostics. It wouldn't let us do it straight off, so we had to take it for a drive, keeping to a set engine speed range.

Hard to say without atleast a fault code?...As it seems the EGR Valve is not at fault after all.

Isnt there something about having to use vag-com to set an egr valve back up after removal ???

yes you have to adapt the new one provided the code relates to an EGR fault. Sorry I just dont trust garages if you want something done right....DIY lol

Thanks for the advice, I will go away and investigate further. If anyone knows were I might find some instructions on how to adapt the new valve or where I might go for advice then please let me know. Once again thanks to those who have contributed, I will let you know how it goes.

only the main dealer or somebody with VCDS can adapt the new valve. If you check VCDS owners list in the Diagnostics & VCDS section another member may be able to help you.

I have a 2.0 FSI , I had the EGR light come up while driving though it did reset alright. That was about a year ago.

It came up the other morning on a cold startup and subsequently came up again after a reset.

I took the cover off the EGR, 6 x T20 screws and seen that the large gear that sits between the motor actuator and the valve had stripped a few teeth. I simply repositioned the gear anticlockwise about 20/25mm (to get away from the more worn teeth). This should be okay for now until I can source a spare, as the gear doen't have to do a full revolution to actuate theEGR valve. I checked the operation by hand and the valve wasn't stuck. Do remove any loose teeth material before closing up. Its a quick check and much easier than removing the whole EGR unit to discover it didn't need a clean afterall. It seems a common failure of EGR, but not worth spending £180 on something that is essentially okay - anyone know if the gear part can be ordered direct from VAG/Skoda direct?

Excuse this post if the 1.6 FSI EGR is a totally different unit.

I've put a picture up in the gallery under projects - octavia 2.0 fsi egr

And as a bonus the EML light reset by itself in the afternoon....

Part not available from Skoda - have to buy complete EGR or rob the part from another VAG/Skoda 2.0 FSI in a breakers - although they will no doubt suffer the same fate with mileage/heat. The Audi updated part still uses a plastic gear.
