Selling a car without tax

Featured Replies

Basically im selling my car...

Due to the new insurance laws right now its uninsured and sorn'd

Got someone coming to look at it on friday.... Now he's going to get temp ins to cover the car, but the car still isnt taxed....

Any way round it? Whats the fine for no tax?

No idea what to do

Only way you can drive a car with no tax is if its on the way to the MOT station or its on trade plates, although with trade plates you need to have trade insurance I believe, I know when my m8 had a garage I paid him £30 to put him on his insurance as a employee so I could borrow his plates now n then lol

It is a **** take because from what i believe you cant tax on temp insurance....

And theres no way im insuring it to tax it (im bloody banned)

Whats the worst that could happen if the guy got caught!? Fine!?

How far is the guy taking it? A lot of motorways have number plate recognition that can monitor when cars are travelling and of late I've also noticed a lot of 'tax checking' cars parked at the side of roads. Could he trailer it?

Well he wants to test drive it :o

He will be travelling around 1 1/2 hrs on mway but its up scotland

But for me to insure it would cost the value of the car

They could sieze the car and crush it.

For no tax?

:o

Its a lot of hassle to go through if the guy turns out to be a test pilot....

You can, done it several times :)

You can't collect a car from a police impound with temp insurance ;)

AND if the driver is not insured to drive your car...

It is a compulsory requirement for any person who uses, causes or permits a vehicle to be used on a road or other public place, to have correct and valid insurance against third party risks. Use of a vehicle includes parking it or leaving it unattended on a road (so it does not have to be driven) or allowing another person to use it.

You are guilty of the offence of permitting the vehicle to be used by an uninsured driver and face a licence endorsement of 6–8 points and a fine.

Insurance isnt the problem, the car WILL be insured via temp insurance, the problem lies tax wise....

So you can tax a car via temp ins?

What i ment me insuring it was so i could tax it to sell it, but i really dont want to do that, to me the car is cheap enough to take a punt on....

Its a 55 plate suzuki ignis sport with 30k miles and i nly want 1500 for it....

How far is he gonna drive it on a test drive? Surely not that far.

I'm sure you could get away with it ;)

If you get stopped just explain to mr policeman and i'm sure he will understand. A fine for failure to display at the worst.

You can :)

Probably round the block at a guess....

Then if he wants to buy he can leave a deposit etc and he can sort insurance and tax for when he picks it up or we could go to post office together....

Nowts easy grrrr!

In theory you can. It's not uncommon for dealers to give 7 days cover and you can tax it on that.

Some day cover insurance actually state on the policy that you cannot use it to tax a car or recover an impounded car. I suggest you ring one of the day cover insurers and ask.

Taxed a few cars using Day Insure policies :)

I personally think its a farce.....

But then my middle name is angry

Here's one that will

Can I buy Road Tax with a dayinsure policy?

Yes. dayinsure short term insurance is suitable. (At the sole discretion of the individual post office and we cannot guarentee that it will be acceptable).

I`m in the same position, royal pain in the arse. I was going to do the same as you, if they want a spin round the block then as long as they have insurance i`ll do it, but if they buy it its up to them to get it home taxed or not.

For some reason the cops were active this morning just using one anpr car saw 2 cars being towed and a third being stopped, which is really unusual as they normally have about 5 cars and 2 bikes and a anpr van

I think the new rule is complete bo**ocks,

I have a vectra as a winter run about thats insured for 3 months but i taxed it for 6 so i need to sell if before my insurence runs out else i get fined for it been tax but not insured,

what a complete joke

Its a nightmare! I may do that day insurance thing then and tax it.... But then when insurance runs out ill face another chance of a fine with the new sorn law!!!

Ahhhhhhh bellends

Hi Jason,

I've just seen your other post. You may find it impossible to get day insurance with a recent DD40 conviction/ban. Do you have a relative who could sell it for you? If so, transfer the car to them, they can tax and insure it and then sell it.

I would day insure it through my dad.... He can tax it too...

You dont have to be the owner to insure :)

Why would anyone need to take it for test drive for 1 & 1/2 hours on a motorway? And when sold its no longer your problem so why bother.

Btw the anpr cameras that check for mot, insurance and tax aren't that fast so if he taxes it the next day nothing will probably come of it. Just make sure he has insurrance and the car is mot'd and tell him he drives it at his own risk.
