Renewing insurance after a ban

Featured Replies

Awesome im risk A which is low risk :)

Can I ask what car you have now?

I know you've got an answer on the provisional but I guess the logic on it is the same as a new driver.

Yup.

as I said above. you can apply for it and may get it but YOU MUST NOT DRIVE until the ban is over.

Don't forget that they have just this week made the theory test harder........http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Nl1/Newsroom/DG_200875

Erm, need to correct you there.

They haven't made the test harder, all they have done is stop publishing the answers to all the questions.

This means new drivers have to actually study to pass the test rather than just learning the answers parrot fashion.

You will still be able to get practice online.

Probably won't affect Jason as he should know all the answers?

Oh joy. Group F. Highest possible group.

 i think i'm going to move to the outer hebrides

I moved last year from an E* to a B. my insurance went down but my wife's went up! Also the actual difference in cost was not actually that much so really not sure how they use these ratings.

All my mates reckon that you need to change insurance companies when you move to a 'better' area. They suspect that your existing insurance company think you should be grateful for any reduction - however small.

I think it'll be a wedge more than £500 surely?! How long we're you banned for? A lad I know was banned for 18 months (IIRC) for dangerous driving as well. His insurance was so expensive that he couldn't afford it! So he's still not driving!

You don't realise how important your license is until it's gone! I intend to look after mine as well as I can! I also predict the retake will be hard with the bad habits that everyone pick up!

Well ban is nearly up...

Was wondering how much of an insurance jump is normal....?

Also got a few q's that have been bugging me....

1. I require a resit (extended test) for dangerous driving, im guessing i go back to being a new driver!? 6 point malarchy for 2 years?

2. Will my insurance take the fact iv got 6 years driving experience and not that i have no idea and just passed?

3. I received no conformation of my ban from dvla? How do i find my ban code?

4. When can i re-apply for a provisional, ban ends 17th march

Cheers

Welcome! I used to be a man with a ban too! banned for dangerous driving which is DD40 1 years ban and extended resit.

1)You will be taking an extended test which they will keep a close eye on you and you will have to drive basically as a learner and do ALL the maneuvers like I did... think mines was about an hour driving. No you don't go back to the 6 points... I called up the DVLA and asked... They said that I passed my test in 2007 so i'm not on the probabtion period regardless if I got banned a year after for a year and had to resit my test.

2) Tell your insurance when you 1st passed your test and tell them what convitions you have...

3) It should be on your counterpart of your license when you recieve it back.

4) think its a month before... sure you get a letter notifying you that you can apply for it.

Take the ban as a lesson and look forward to the £1000+ insurance premium! it sucks! :(

I got a 12 month ban

Thing is i just cant fathom the law... Drink drivers get their license straight back after a year, now im not condoning what i did but surely drink driving is more severe than what i did......

That's a difficult one as a regular drinker could be just over the limit but still have all of his senses and be safe behind the wheel (that doesn't for one second make it right though  ) whereas someone who has been stopped and convicted of dangerous driving has already proved they are being a danger.

Drink driving is 100% wrong IMO, but every case is different as pointed out above so it is not always so clear cut.

Actually Dangerous Driving is treated more seriously, if you only got a 12 month ban you have been quite lucky as it does also carry a prison sentence should the magistrate or judge see fit!! the extended test part of your ban can also be added to drink drivers as well but this would be again decided by the magistrates or judge at time of the sentence being passed!

Strange on this dvla sent me through a D27p renewal after ban, filled it in but was unsure about details so phoned dvla...

Asked if i would get a provisional back to which the woman said no, i'll get my full license...

So i said ah i see

So she double checked.... Yes sir you'll get the full license back.

So i dont have to resit??

Fingers crossed on that one

Anyone?

AFAIK, unless a Scottish court orders a retest as part of the sentence, you won't have to take one.

The scottish court ordered a resit when i got sentance... But ive recently had a disclosure through and it states all facts about my ban but has no word of a resit

Im hoping ive dodged a bullet here :o

If the court ordered a retest then you must do it.

If your driving licence has been retained by the Court until you pass a driving test, you have to make a formal application for your licence to be reinstated. You won't get your licence automatically.

Dvla sent me the application form?

Your counterpart lisence will say something about extended test on it if you require to take one.

Jason,

When you spoke to DVLA did you tell them that the court sentenced you to the 12 month ban AND to retake your test?

If not, they might have given you information based on what you told them and the info they hold on their database?

If I were you I would phone them again and double check, making sure you tell them about the whole of the court sentence.

Also ask them to tell you exactly what you have to do to regain your full licence.

Good luck matey

No i was having trouble filling the form in.... Wasnt sure if i needed to prove id etc.... Form had my license number and date of when my ban was up. So i just phoned to make sure i was filling it in correctly.

Then i asked the operator if i would get a provisional back... So she checked my details. Said i had a dd40 but didnt require a resit and would get my full license back

On my disclosure form it states everything about my ban. States court dates, period of ban, fine but no word of resit

Just going to send what they sent me and wait and see what arrives.... Fingers crossed its pink and minus an L plate logo

Be careful here - if DVLA send you the wrong licence in error (e.g. they noted no resit required, but the court ordered an extended retest), you are not supposed to use it beyond the rights you'd have if they sent you the right licence. If you're driving on a full licence issued in error, and the plod decide to give you a hard time, you're pretty much guaranteed to face charges of driving without a licence, and possibly fraud charges if they're really gunning for you (because you tried to trick them by claiming you had a full licence still).

Safe thing to do is to contact the court that issued the ban, and get them to clear things up - keep records of contact with the court, so that if the result is that you keep your full licence without a retest, you can at least show that you tried to get it sorted like an honest driver. While the court is trying to clear it up, don't use the licence as anything other than a provisional; you're entitled to a provisional, and if you've got L-plates and a supervising driver (and stay off motorways), it's clear that you're trying hard to comply with what the court ordered, and thus should keep you safe from a second ban.

+1 I agree.
