More electrical problems.

Featured Replies

Last night I came home and realised as I parked up and took my key out that I was still doing 50mph. I thought I didn't usually go this fast on my driveway so I investigated my speedometer. Much to my amazement it was out by approx 50mph. (against my tomtom). Stuck speedo. Took it for a drive and still said 50. Got it home took it apart and the sheet with all the numbers (speed rpm fuel) wasn't sitting properly jamming up the needle. After some serious **** balling around I put it back together and tested it.

The car beeped the serious warning beep and said light out and immobilised after about a second of running. I did not disconnect the battery when I took the dials apart. If anybody knows how to get this piece of **** running again I'd be greatful. Thanks

Ross.

When you took the cluster out you may have pulled the wires that lead to the immo reader coil.

Thanks Matt, had a wiggle on the plugs. Still no luck.

Got to be the plugs/sockets, or static damage to the cluster when it was out of the car. Golden rule, wear a PC tech type wrist earth when working on clusters or ECU.

IIRC the cluster is £160 and you need the SCK code from a dealer to adapt it.

Ffs. Car can stay off the road for another month or until I feel it's worth the money I spend on it. Don't really need it...

Did you check the connector at the immo-reader end where the key goes in? It's unlikely that static would cause a problem with just the immo.

Immo reader?

Immo reader?

There is a coil around the ignition lock which connects to the cluster insert via a pair of twisted wires. The coil communicates with the chip in your key. The pair of twisted wires connects to the coil via a connector which can be pulled off. It is also quite easy to damage/break the wires.

Ross its the right hand side plug (green iirc with lever) not seating properly just wiggling about won't fix. It needs to be taken out again and carefully replace making sure the lever is open at first then fully closed when pushed all the way in. If this does not fix it you need to take the cluster back out and check for bent pins !!

Now, about that airbag light *facepalm*

Glad it's running again, but if the speedo is sticking I'd suspect the dash cluster is goosed, didnt you have issues with that before mate?

Common for the Airbag light to come on if you remove/replace instrument cluster with the battery connected.

Vagcom required or one of the cheap Vag Diagnostic Tools off Ebay

I got one of these does the job.

Ross, I've had the lights all done blue, I suspect that's why it is. Don't be mad at Dark_Hero though, call it a learning curve :)
