Ignition Coil Recall 28F7

scathing attack

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I've joined the site today and wondered if I could ask for some advice from the experts on here.

I have a Petrol VRS 07 reg. and since yesterday, the EPC and CEL lights have been constantly on. To date, I've done around 50 miles since the lights came on and the car seems to be driving normally.

I took the car into my local independent today and the diagnostic came back with code 0601 indicating a new ECU was needed.

I then took the car to the local dealer (Benfield - Harrogate) to check if the 24K5 software update had been applied to the car. I was told this was done a month before I bought it in March 2009, although there is no sticker verifying this in the boot or stamp in the service book for it.

Whilst at the dealer, the bloke in the service dept. then said that the car was eligible for the Ignition Coil recall mentioned in the title, and indicated that this ought to sort the warning lights out without the need for a new ECU. Do you think that this will solve this problem with the warning lights? I'm hoping so, as a new ECU (part only) from them was quoted at £1691 (before fitting!!!!!!!!)

In addition, am I ok to keep driving the car with these warning lights on? The recall appointment could not be scheduled until the 9th of Feb. I'm told the car may go to 'limp home' mode at any time. Is that true?

Advice on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Richard

Hi, Fault code 00601 relates to a heater flap motor sensor, no need for a ecu !!!

Thanks for the prompt reply, but the code I gave was inaccurate. I can't recall the exact code, but the clear message from the independent garage who performed the diagnostic was that the ecu unit needed replacing. They were not pulling a fast one on this, as they then advised me to go to the nearby local dealer, so that they could verify if I had the software upgrade associated with the 24K5 campaign.

So the queries I had in my original post still apply.

Cheers

Thanks DGW

From the link you provided I got the following : -

When found in 2.0l TFSI (BPY, BWA, BWJ):

* Check Engine Control Module Software Version and Update if necessary.

Skoda Octavia (1Z), see Action 24K5 (2014942).

As stated in my original post, my local dealer has told me that this action 24K5 was carried out in February 2009. They also told me that the car was due the 28F7 action, which is scheduled for 09/02/12, so will this action turn off my ECP and CEL warning lights, as the dealer service dept. indicated it might/should or will I be looking at a new ECU?

Any technical expertise on this from you Briskodians gratefully received. Thanks.

I'd say go in for the recall on the coils and ask them to verify the ECU is up to date, mention there is no sticker in the boot. They will check, if a recall has been carried out but no sticker was put in the boot then they haven't done the recall properly.

Thanks Tech1e and also thanks to Paul at Shark for his PM'd advice.

I'm not convinced that the 24K5 update was done on my car. As stated before, there's no sticker under the carpet in the boot, no stamp in the service book and when the dealer's service bloke was checking the database, he told me it had been done in Feb 2009, but couldn't tell me where this was done?! Surely this information would be on the database as well?

So if the ignition coils need to be changed as a result of the 28F7, will this change mean the EPC and CEL warning lights will disappear, as the dealer said it may/should?

I've previously had an Audi TT and when the coils were changed on this, the CEL light went out. Not sure about the EPC light?

Cheers

  • 2 months later...

Update - the ignition coil recall didn't fix the EPC light issue, but Shark performance did! Thanks to Paul and his team. It was the old story of Skoda claiming that the software upgrade had been done, and recording this on their database, but the work not actually having been done, so the software version was not upgraded. Not upgraded till Shark did the business anyway.
