180bhp & everything else standard

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I have found a place through my mate that does remaps, he got his remapped last year and is running at 180bhp (everything else is standard) this is regarding Fabia VRS 1.9

My fabia is completely standard & toying with getting a remap done through him.. The question i'm asking is can i run mine at that power (180bhp) and still be safe regarding the standard turbo & intercooler. I know there is the clutch issue however as long as i keep revs over 3000rpm before flooring it i should be ok shouldn't i

As my car is running perfectly & no problems & standard obviously i don't want to get it remapped to 180bhp if there is a medium/high risk of my turbo blowing up or something else along those lines. But I would like to get the maximum I can get with being safe.

Appreciate any advice

Who's doing the map?

There is more chance of your turbo going pop with a remap than with no map, It will just speed up its lifespan...

Il be having a map done in the next few weeks by unit 18, more importantly to me was sorting the breaking & suspension out before adding extra power

It's a place called Cadnam Garage, quite local to me. I know alot of people run 170 175 on standard turbos, so would 5 more bhp make much difference?

180 is asking a lot and also "180" can vary from dyno to dyno, how the car is strapped down (strapping down "loosely" can fake more power)

Lots of variables. Just need to ensure sensible boost is being requested, and its not too smoky.

Tbh it's going to be more like the 165-170bhp sort of level, probaly quoting 180bhp from being on an over enthusiast dyno methinks. Lol Jase you beat me to it.

AMD mapped mine to 185bhp on their rollers with standard everything bar clutch and 50 odd k later still original turbo and intercooler

My map is 175ish aswell been on 20k no problems other than my clutch is slipping again 2nd one in 12 months but I know it's down to the way I drive it low down in the revs but that's my prerogative,I think it's a waste of power once your at 2.5k rpm that's halfway through the powerband but everyone has there own driving style, I am taking the decision to go smf route only thing I would do is change your pads for some mintex or ferrodos can't recommend th enough

Mine showed between 285bhp and 265bhp on their rollers. It's probably 250-260bhp.

So if you are quoting 185bhp, it's probably around the 170-175 mark which is much more sensible for a remap only.

Which would explain why nothing has gone pop. :)

Thanks for the advice, however he did get it tested on some rollers else where which came out to 180, so two different garages got 180 readings.

its whether I decide to take that risk and go with the same mapper he went with or stay safe at 160-170.. I guess I can speak to my mate, and if everything is ok on his car then maybe I'd be ok with mine at 180 there abouts with everything standard.

It's just something I dont want to regret if my turbo pops cus of that power.

Also Pete you said about mintex & ferrodos.. I have heard roumers they squeal their tits off, I don't know what other views there are with them as I was looking at MTEC discs and mintex pads till I heard the roumers about them.

Anyone know of MTEC discs and the quality of them?

If the car made 180 supposedly, could they set the car up for low torque sensible boost, & little smoke but still have that amount of power and would that lower the chance of any turbo problems?

Mine are fine they did squeal a bit during the summer but that because they were sticking slightly and need the carrier guides greasing up and I personally ain't had a problem you will find the standard pads can't really handle te pressure when being abused so best to get some decent pads

That helps thanks, you running standard discs?

Yeah standard discs but mintex pads and they are more than capable of dealing with the extra bhp alot of people have upgraded to the 312mm calipers, another alternative

Not sure about the mtech discs I've seen front and rear with mintex pads for £140 on eBay there the grooved ones but I wasnt sure about them, I'll wait for someone else to shed some light onto them before I buy them

But definately get the remap it will put a smile on your face

Ok, I have done a topic above this one on MTEC discs to look into it.

Also yeah will definitely get one, It's just deciding do I go/aim for 180 with standard parts haha, last thing I want is a knackered turbo

More likely be around 170ish BHP like others have said. Not having a dig it's just facts, the turbo can't flow that much air.

Diesels are very forgiving in their mapping. You can simply max a couple of maps to get an instant high 160's. Don't let smaller companies put you off, most will simply buy the maps from their hardware/software supplier.

Ok thanks for the info

Had mine mapped to 182 (to be precise) and this was 15 months ago and no problems so far apart from eating through Toyos in 7 months and being stopped by Police twice (not traffic cops thank God) which is a lot of food for thought even though I love driving quite hard and it does seem rapid. The guys that did mine are diesel nuts have had a contracted out arrangement for over ten years and I do trust them. Yes there is some smoke but this is intermitment and only when I am driving too hard for a long time and I have had no problems - so far.

I would add I don't tend to 'floor it' as you phrased it all the time (certainly not in the wrong gear as that always leads to spinning front wheels) and like to do my overtaking between 2,000 and 3,500 revs if I can. Certainly very different to drive compared to twin cam 16 petrol cars.

Was that a stage 1 remap *only*? Also what company was that with?

Yes. I have to admit that even though it is a very fine ride and quite rapid now they are a bit coy about passing on the details. I think they like the business too much to pass the name on. I know its lame but all I can say is speak to Gwyn or Luke Davies at Shobdon in Herefordshire. The guy that does my servicing every six months or so and was into Asta 'red tops' in his youth is very impressed and is poised to buy an older Fabia VRS (which needs quite a bit of work) on the basis of having driven mine.

Ok thanks very much :) how much do they charge? I'm guessing around 250?

Google them and phone. No they charged more than that although I guess it might be. negotiable. I was very happy with the result.
