how to decarbon a turbo?

Featured Replies

Innotec is not available in india so my only option is to take the turbo from the car and clean it manually. Can i do it by dipping turbo into petrol or any other chemical for some hours?will the carbon deposits go by doing so? or should i give it to a turbo specialist to strip it and clean?

Can you not buy any cleaner and get it sent over to yourself in India?

Suggest getting specialist to clean turbo, who will take it apart and re-assemble, once you have removed turbo from car then after, refit.

If you are not certain what you are doing you could damage a very expensive important component.

what i thought is get the turbo and inlet manifold out of the car from the local garage and clean it up. but wanted to know whether dipping it would take the carbon deposits off?if it doesnt i gotta take it to a specialist to strip and clean.

Just curious to know ..

How do you know that the turbo needs decarboning ??

are there any symptoms ? or is it needed after X kms ?

There is a guide to Limp mode here. It has a link to cleaning your turbo.

It strikes me that rather than cleaning the vanes, the only bit you will need is the

nozzle ring.

you can see what has happened to the turbo as carbon builds up and "jams" up the moveable vanes in the following pics /article on the tdi forum, (that is invaluable if you run a "mature" mk 4 golf like me!!) see the link here http://www.technologie-entwicklung.de/Gasturbines/VNT15-Turbo/vnt15-turbo.html .its a good breakdown on the workings of the vag fitted turbo , elsewhere on the forum was a complete stripdown of the turbo showing how to free up the moveable vanes , if you are relatively savvy and have a good workshop /tool facilities its not too bad a job by what the guy says !!

Someone suggested using oven cleaner to clear the carbon deposits ( when turbo is dismantled ) - seems a good idea to me.

Yep mr muscle oven cleaner..... Has to be cold engine though (apparently)

Long thread here on Mr Muslel.

And a good guide here.

I'm waiting on delivery of a vacuum pump to test my system. I will have a go at cleaning before I go to the trouble of replacing the turbo.

finally found the service schedule for the stripdown of the turbo its come from the states but the methods and materials used are bang on as are the instructions , reading it is interesting and i think if you are in no hurry and can apply good workshop practice its straightforward but some parts do require pretty strict engineering disciplines and could lead to expensive **** ups if rushed or corners were cut , that said faint heart never etc etc ..

here is the link if anyones got a spare turbo to practicehttp://pics.tdiclub.com/data/500/Drivbiwire_VNT_repair_procedure_small.pdf on first !!
