New dual mass - now rattling noise at tick over

Featured Replies

1.9 105 pd tdi which had a new dual mass fitted yesterday, car now drives perfect again but i have a problem now where by the car is rattling from around the flywheel area when ticking over (very noticable). As soon as you dip the clutch the noises clears completely and the engine sounds as sweet as its always done.

Taking it back to the garage tomorrow but would like to hear from anyone that might know / have thoughts on what they might have done wrong before i get there.

It was a sachs dual mass flywheel and clutch kit and like i said above it drives absolutely perfect again i just have this bizarre noise when ticking over.

Thanks folks

It could be the thrust bearing, you don't seem to get them in the kits.

Agree with Mike should of had an SMF instead.Highly recommended

I did in the middle of last year and i've just paid to have it taken out and a dual mass put back in, drove aweful IMO with the SMF installed, (reminded me of my 1997 peugeot diesel)

The opinion at the garage this morning was gearbox chatter, said they put gen VW gearbox oil in but he was gonna ring someone at skoda technical and see if they recommended anything.

Solid mass kit will be going on the bay soon, only done 3k on it and the clutch wasn't even bedded in.

sounds like something which seems common on many Seat's from new it has become a habit to just touch the throttle WHEN it happens at tickover- maybe adjusted for a few more revs would fix it

Well the verdict from the garage is gearbox noise. Apparently they drained the gearbox oil today and said it only had half a litre in there when it should have had nearly 2. I asked "didn't you have to change the gearbox oil yesterday when u did the dual mass" and they assure me they never touched the box because unlike most manufacturers this isn't required on vw's during a flywheel change. This was after a different bloke told me this morning they had changed the box oil.

The skoda main dealer in are the last people i know for certain changed the gearbox oil because they did it at approx 23k miles when i complained about a slight syncro problem on 2nd gear.

My thoughts now are did the main dealers never fill the box back up correctly at 23k miles or is the indy garage that did this work trying to cover up a potential **** up that has now left me with a noisy gearbox.

When i asked the indy if it needs a new box they suggest not and said "just run it it'll be fine"

Certainly doesn't sound fine to me (except for when the clutch is down)and had none of these noises on Wednesday when it went in. I honestly dont really know where to go from here.

Do i just run it and accept this extra noise at tick over ?

Do i trade it in and move on (no idea what a late 2007 elegance with 29k on the clock is worth)?

Do i persue the gearbox oil **** up with either the main dealer or the indy ? I suspect my chances of any joy out the main dealer are slim because they did that oil change just before the warranty expired and the car is now over 4 yrs old.

Found a place that does re con'd boxes but it looks like im looking at another £500 plus for that option.

Really annoyed about this because this aside the car is in near showroom condition.

Found this on youtube which is exactly how mine now sounds

comments seem to suggest just ignore it and carry on regardless. Im now starting to wonder if the 8 months with the solid mass / excess vibration has knackered the box.

I thought the oil was drained when the gearbox comes out?

Obviously not then

So did i but he assures me this is not the case on a vw box because they are sealed different. I know its certainly the case with most manufacturers.

That videos interesting. You can just make out the different noise upon release.Doesn,t sound bad to me.I have had a SMF on mine for 15K now and notice no difference at all in noises.Just very quiet and no rattling/vibration.I don,t think your previous SMF has done any damage at all but lack of oil in the gearbox is probally the main cause.

Your probably right and yes that video is exactly how ours now sounds. It's only the dog transporter, supermarket car and bike trailer tower so im very tempted to just say "sod it" and run it until it either gets so bad that it has to have a box re con or is old enough that we dont really care. We bought it when we got the dog so my plan was always keep it while he is with us and then downsize to a golf or equivalent when the old boy isn't here anymore. Being a skoda i was confident it'd out live the dog but im not so sure anymore.

The gearbox oil issue just reminds me why i should get my hands dirty and do all the work myself. The old cliche "want a job doing right do it yourself"

In some certain situations i think your right there. If your gearbox is topped up now i would leave it as it is if it sounds like the video because i don,t think its bad.Just enjoy your car.Good luck

In the video you linked to does "clutch released" mean the pedal realeased or the clucth plates, which would be pedal depressed? I have an '07 1.9TDi and at tick over it makes a slight rattle if I rest my foot on the clutch pedal lightly but it doesn't bother me.
