Lambda probe faults - helpful advice

This info is fairly old but none the less useful especially for those who may not have taken their car into a dealer as yet for help. If you have the EML on with the following fault codes

First number is the VAG number, second the P code from a generic tester.

17604 - P1196

17586 - P1178

17584 - P1176

17588 - P1180

17591 - P1183

17598 - P1190

17598 - P1181

17524 - P1116

All relate lambda probe issues.

Check the software version of the engine control unit if you have

BBY ecu number 036906034CB - 4421, 4458, 4558, 4831, 4965

036906034GN - 5160

BBZ ecu number 036906034DF - 4563, 4592, 4842, 5020, 5954

These need updating to

BBY - 036997034 5948

036997034HN 5513

BBZ - 036997034BD 7747

This is done via a CD in the VAS machine. After the update is done I have found you have to disconnect the battery for a few minutes, it's a good idea to touch the two clamps together with the battery disconnected to discharge the system entirely and then reconnect, reset throttle valve and EGR. I have found without the terminal 30 reset of the battery it can log MAP sensor faults with an unstable idle, this I think is just due to the new software and the faults clear as soon as its reset, kinda needs to reboot with the new software in there much like a PC.

Of course it may not be the only issue but is worth a shot first as replacing lambda probes etc won't sort the issue if it's a software problem. Please not this is NOT a recall, it's some information I found is all so you would need to visit a dealer for the work. The info provided is correct at the time posted, this however may and probably will change but it's a good heads up for anyone struggling. Please treat this info with care and use your brain, no dealer is going to be impressed if you go in waving this about but just use it so your a little more informed. It's meant to assist anyone that might be struggling with a DIY repair or a non franchised garage who aren't aware of the remedy.
