Dead Scout

Featured Replies

The slight rattle in the engine has developed into something more serious - a dead engine. 99% sure it's a big end bearing that couldn't cope until tomorrow when I was going to chane them :(

So...

Next plan is to drop a new engine in.

Is there anything stopping me putting in a VRS unit instead of the standard scout engine - any probs with gearboxes/4x4 system fitting etc. etc.

thanks for any help

What happened to the engine to cause that?

Was it a 2.0 or 1.9?

2.0 PD TDi. Not sure exactly why it happened. engine just coming up to 125000 miles, has been serviced regularly with OEM parts and oil.

TBH i should have got it sorted sooner - started making a bit of a nois 2w ago but with work I've not had time to sort it and have done 3k miles since the noise started...

Did it sound like a canal boat engine??

If it does it will be the cam shaft, you will need a new one and shells and a set of lifters 1 rocker gasget and one fuel pump gasget

make sure the new cam and lifters are the hardend version £600 all in fitted, cheaper if you fit them yourself

skippy - 99% def it's the cam shaft that's gone (definitely sounded like a 1 cylinder canal boat for the last couple of days), thanks for your advice

Considered getting the cam re-ground and then oversized shells etc. but after all of that work have decided it's easier to get a new engine. The turbo on the old on was possibly on its way out as ver noisy, there is also some question taht there's diesel going into the sump so overall safer with a new one!

I've bought at 40k enigine including clutch for £1300 so will hopefully be able to fit it for about £1600 all in (replace timing/aux belt and water pump while it's out. Got a goo friend who'll do the work for me treating his cat for free so it all works out pretty well...

Does anyone know which way the engine comes out of the scout - up or down? Presuming up because of the prop shaft etc. but would like to find out before we get it most of the way out one way before realising it needs to go out the other way.

Engine goes out the bottom with the gearbox etc on it.

Not the first 2.0 8V PD that's taken a camshaft out I've seen.

Thanks tech1e - any idea how much of a pain getting the prop-shaft out of the way is? I'm hoping some sort of spline link that can be loosened and slid out?
