white smoke.....

Featured Replies

hi all.....

some advice needed.

have an 04 oc vrs with 64k on the clock. had it mapped in dec and something went wrong today.

under low load driving its fine, but when under heavy load, ie 4th, 5th gear at say 3k it puffs out white smoke after lift off revs....

is this turbo gone pop?

boost leak from pancake? (was advisory after remap)

water?

oil leak on exhaust?

cheers in advance

if i need a new turbo..... which one is it? a ko3s or a ko4?

sorry as you can see im no expert!

This sounds like turbo, head gasket, or valve stem oil seals to me. Unfortunately I'd need to actually see the car to know which, beyond that if it gets to James Bond smokescreen proportions it's definitely the turbo!

Iv always thought when an engine burnt oil it came out blue-ish?

White to me says its running a tad lean

Also hows your oil consumption?

Have you had a smell of the exhaust fumes? This always gives a good insight into what the crack is (obviously only need a quick wiff, dont want you keeling over!)

does white smoke not indicate water - i.e. head gasket problem?

The colour of lubricating oil smoke depends on how much you're burning at once EJ; I've seen 2 cars blow their exhaust turbine oil seals, and they both produced white James Bond style smoke screens. This also happened to my Dad once when he'd changed the oil filter and the new one hadn't sealed properly; he went to overtake someone, and the oil pressure went high enough to blow out the seal and spray oil onto the exhaust until the revs went back down.

You're dead right about typical amounts of smoke from worn oil seals or piston rings/bores.
