forget to mention it is a 52 plate 1.9 TDI estate

Check the level sender in the tank (two little prongs) if they are crusted up scrape them clean with a flat bladed screwdriver. Also check the wiring to the sender is ok.

Was the light orange or red?

If the former, just check the fluid level is ok (as you say it is), then look at the prongs in the expansion tank - they often get covered in bubbles (more so when cold). The bubbles cause an increased resistance across the sensor (prongs) so the ECU thinks the fluid level is lower than it really is.....

The Skoda solution is a new tank, the cheap solution is a toothbrush / stick / piece of wire, etc to 'clean' the prongs. What ever you use, make sure it is clean, and don't use the Misses' toothbrush and then fail to tell her....

I had to clear mine about 4 years ago for this fault and since then it hasn't returned. The car did have a new coolant tank before my ownership (I suspect for this very fault).

Thank you all for your help

i have just had a look at the probes and there seems to be a little bit of corrosion on them. clean them up as much as i could due to the lack of light i will complete the job in the light

thank once again

Glad I saw this threar, I had this on mine the other day too. Scared the **** out of me as I was 40 miles from home and it was freezing cold! I just turned it off, checked the level then disconnected and reconnected the sensor under the bonnet and it didn't come back. I'll try and clean the prongs up some time just to be sure.
