Turbo Whine

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Since owning my car i have always had turbo whine......since its got cold it seems to have changed tone.

Now i know people will say its a turbo on the way out BUT its a newly rebuilt turbo, doesnt smoke, always run down before shutting hte car off, car boosts fine and holds the correct boost. The rolling road i had recently (although slightly disappointing) showed it boosted fine, held it and fuelled perfectly.

The previous owner is adamant its fine and says a lot of it comes from it having a high flow manifold on rather than the standard so it makes a different sound.

Am i just being paranoid im going to blow it up?

its running quite high boost for a k0s iirc

Been told it peaks highish but holds a steady 1.2bar

Do you know what it peaks at?

And yep a high flow manifold will make it sound different, the exhaust gasses escape much more easily so it spools up a lot quicker.

I drove group1vrs's car the other day and his turbo sounded totally different to how mine used to, both had the standard turbo and manifold though, his sounded more high pitched.

Mine sounds more umm fluttery? It peaks at 1.4bar

I have not noticed the turbo change sound in any weather condition before? It remains constant.

It might just be me listening more. I've always been paranoid with turbos. N/a cars I rev n rev turbos I just worry

How it sounds in the cabin will also depend on all sorts of things... whether you've got sound deadening under the bonnet, the make and condition of the boost hoses, how much stuff you've got in the glovebox, etc etc

Yea well I had an induction kit and a high flow manifold so I'm guessing this all contributes to a more fluttery, whine on boost.

Yeah it will, with an induction kit you can hear the compressor blades chopping through the air a lot more clearly than you would do with just the standard airbox.

My only other turbo was an Audi s4 that had 2 small turbos. Made no noise as they were progressive.

A girl said my car sounded broken haha but it is all noise from the turbo. May have it put to a remapper and have boost checked and a slightly lower pressure map put on
