07 octavia VRS low oil pressure

Featured Replies

Hello,

My wife has been complaining that my beloved VRS keeps making a rattling noise on idle, which I never heard till she drove us home the other day, then the next day the red oil light flashed and beeped 3 x . I told her to turn it off for a bit and took it to the local vag specialist who says its low oil pressure and to only drive short journeys and if the light comes on to phone him and he would recover it, and he would look next week,

Iv been looking on forums and they all say dont drive, to take off sump clean and replace pick up pipe, is this true please help

Many Thanks

Aran

Oil pick up pipe blocked m8 stop driving it and get it to a garage. Needs the sump dropping and a new pick up pipe fitting

edit:

didn't read the bottom bit Yup you have it right stop driving lol

First off if its an 07 then it'll be a Mk2 VRS?

There is a known oil pickup problem with the 1.8T engine in the Mk1 VRS.

If you have a low oil pressure warning light though regardless of what car it is I wouldn't drive it, you can do some damage to the top end

Many thanks to you both, The VAG garage mecanic is obviously not so good, I had it serviced at VW within the last 3months as it was £100 inc mot, would cleaning the pick up pipe not be part of a normal service then?

Im going to have a go at cleaning or replacing it tommorow

Thanks again

No its not part of the service. Is yours a Mk1 or Mk2 octy?

For Mk1 :

The pick up pipe is under a Tenner I think from the dealer hence it's just as cheap to replace it. You'll need extra long allen keys for the bolts and sump sealer as there's no gasket. There's a how to somewhere on here

Yeah its a mk2, I read / seen the pics in the forum for changing it on the MK1, I used to have a yellow 1 by the way, so figured its probly fairly similar to do?

Don't think it would be the same m8 different engine etc. Id ask in the Mk2 forum

I would'nt drive it at all, don't know whether it is a petrol or diesel, there is one VW diesel engine that has problems with the oil pump drive.

Moving to the Octavia 2 forum.

Hey bud, I got the same rattling on idle but no loss of power or anything else.  This has been like this for a few months and meantn to have it investigated, however I have now been getting the red oil can warning on the dash.  Turn the engine off and leave it for 10 mins and its ok again and now intermittent.  I now think, as a result of your post, that it may be the same as your problem.  Why would a pick up pipe cause a rattle that seemed like a loose chain type noise.  Has your rattle disappeared?  Any help would be appreciated.  Cheers

Friend of mine has a 1.8T Passat. At 90k he had the problem. A local garage new the cause, dropped the sump and cleaned the pickup strainer and pipe to remove sludge. Still drives like new 15k later

Did he have the idle rattling too and if so any idea why the blocked strainer would cause rattling? Cheers

He did not talk about it in great detail but the top end noise like noisy tappets brought it to his attention. The lack of oil to the hydraulic tappets.

Thanks for your reply bud. The symptoms are the same on my Octy 2, 2.0tdi, 130k. Regularly serviced. Top end rattle on idle and over last 2 weeks red oil can warning light and stop engine immediately warning. Turned off and left for 10 mins and no warning lights. Intermittent problem so no confidence in using it at the moment. Garage connected it to computer with no error but if it is pickup pipe then no surprise. Mechanic said it could be oil pump too. I hope when he drops the sump next week it's the pickup pipe...!

My pal was talking about it yesterday over a pint and he mentioned that the oil pump was replaced. Other than that a full flush through brought the engine back to health.

Update...garage dropped sump and the pick up pipe was partially blocked hence the rattle on idle as little oil getting up top. Also as it was partially blocked the warning light issue was intermittent. Cleaned pipe and oil and filter change and 'finger to head's all is well. Thans for your replies and information guys.
