sep 2002 Fabia 1.4 8V

Featured Replies

Hi just bought a 8v 1.4L late 2002 model from a Skoda garage. I asked them before I bought it whether it was Skoda or VW derived engine as I read about head gasket problems on the old skoda derived unit. The garage said it was a cambelt sohc vw engine out of a Polo. Is this true? Can one read an engine plate in the car and verify the engine type. What does MPI mean in relation to other posts on the 8v 1.4. Thanks

yo, i think sohc means single over head cam, and mpi means multi point injection, and im pretty sure all sokda engines post 2000 are VW and the 1.4 is from the polo, not completly sure im right though!!

hope i could be of some help!

unless they changed it, the engine is the old Skoda unit. It was given mpi while in the felicia. It has one cam, but it runs off pushrods. If it sounds a bit rattly then it's definatly the Skoda unit.

Hello!my wife had a 2001 classic 1.4 mpi.Not one problem in the three years we had the car.Enjoy yours!

Looking at the reply the question is still open. Some think it's an antique pushrod skoda unit others a vw. Engines normally have an identification plate. Does any one know where the 1.4 8v plate is and the naming convention i.e. this means pushrod that means cambelt or chain.

I think MPI is Multi Point Injection but I'm not 100% sure.

My first Fabia had that engine and I had no problems with it.

What does it sound like? if it sounds fairly quiet and smooth, it's a VW unit, it it sounds rougher and a bit more like a diesel, then it's the Skoda unit. Easy as that.

Its a over bored felicia engine.

If it's 8v and a 1.4 then it's definitely a Skoda engine.

They never fitted a 1.4 VW engine to the Fabia. The Fabia is a heavy car but it's not a bad engine, I drove one a couple of times and it's a big improvement over the older 1.3 Skoda engine in the Felicia.

So the 75hp And 100hp Arn't VW Either? And out of intrest where did the 1.0 Pop in, is that a VW?

Then listen for the snoring :)

The engine type should be listed on a sticker inside the front cover of the Service Schedule, on a similar sticker on the boot floor under the carpet, and be embossed somewhere near the top of the engine block where it can be seen. You are looking for a 3-letter code, eg AME, AQW, ATZ - all of which are variants of the 1.4 68hp engine.

Haven't had chance to check the markings but looking at the cylinders there is nothing resembling a belt or chain cover on the engine side so it has to be an Skoda pushrod engine. As per usual the sales man was wrong. When I asked to see the service history the garage said it wasn't available yet. So I bought the car and then they produce what's marked a "duplicate". They do a service and don't change the air filter.

Ooops, when I said they never fitted a 1.4 VW engine to the Fabia, I meant they never fitted a 1.4 8v VW engine to the Fabia. All 8v 1.4s are Skoda engines, all 16v VW.

Yes I now checked and it's an AQW which is an old skoda engine reworked by audi. The garge have checked and say it definatley chain driven and that air filters and plugs are a 40k service interval.
