When importing somthing into the UK do you get stung for the usual v.a.t rate @17.5 % ?

Depends on how they feel.

Certain items incur more vat than others.

Others however, may be subject to very small amounts.

They have a list of what's what and how much vat to add.

Best bet is phone them and ask how much it will be subject to.

So it could still work out pretty cheap then.

@ manguish - who would you have to call to find out? Customs?

@ sdmegawuk - which company is that quote from please?

Be carefull there are K04 housings.

Also there are some K04's which won't be much use over and above a k03(s) other than less stressed.

Please please search here before comitting. Not all K04's fit straight on and not all K04's are created or altered equally

Re the customs VAT thingy, my mate who lives over in the States says all the sender has to do is write 'gift' on the customs form and it'll be ignored by customs .

The company is called: Audspeed-import-performance i found them on ebay. Followed all the limks etc and found there website. I e-mailled them explaining what i wanted and they replyed in about an hour and where really helpful. Try this below

And if it says GIFT, you'll have no insurance.

Also - if you de-value the package, it will be insured for the value you write on it.

Furthermore - if caught - you'll be done for fraud.

Neither are worth the hassle.

You have not only VAT, but also Import Duty. 17.5% and 3.5% (If I remember correctly)

Adds quite a bit to the price! (if HM C&E actually sting you for it )

Oh.. And also the delivery company is likely to make a charge for holding your package for you! Cheeky gits.

You pay VAT and import tax on the whole cost, including postage! Writing gift on it makes no difference. I had some homemade cookies and sweets sent by a friend in the US of A and had to pay the dreaded taxes on it :( my friend had put a value of $60 on it and marked it as a gift and listed the contents.

I called the Customs people to complain and they were very helpful and friendly but the rules had to be followed. Anything below

If you are on good terms with them & they are up to help get them to make it look old, bit of dirty grease on it, bit of matt black paint etc, then its obviously worth a lot less as its second hand parts! Works for harley Engines anyway !! Also try for a source in Canada, they seem to get through easier

I got stung by customs years ago when I ordered aload of star trek stuff from the states! It ended up costs more than what it would have cost over here!!

Gift thing does work but I've only used it on cheaper valued items and the price still is on the custom slip

You could always ask them to ship it to you as a commercial sample It'll need to be sent to a business address though. That way you can declare the value for insurance but avoid the VAT etc. Ask them if they'll send the paperwork on a few days later
