Security Shield Malware

Featured Replies

My brother has just rung me for advice but I haven't a clue. Hope you guys can help.

His PC is infected with the "security shield" rouge malware, now he can't do anything without the warning page of security shield blocking everything out, can't even play solitare or do email. There is a button to "carry on unprotected", but pressing this makes it goes away for about two seconds then the warning page comes up again. Consequently, he can't download Malwarebytes, or anything else for that matter, which are know for getting rid of security shield.

Is there anything he can do other than a trip to the computer shop. Can't help him myself 'cos he's 220 miles away from me in Maryport.

Incidently, he believes he got this from the German Mercedes 190 website, but don't hold that against him, he is 74.

My cousin had this on his XP machine. I found it conveniently deleted all his restore points so that was out. I went through loads of files to remove it, had to use my laptop to google answers as the browser was unusable only after to find after 3 hours it still hadn't gone. By this stage I gave up and stuck the XP disk in, formatted and started again. These days with 7 it only takes 20mins if that so it's not as last resort as it used to be.

Thank you both

No problem, the first port of call for any infection is to try "Safe Mode", when you get MWB installed, run it in safe mode as well.

This is easily removable. You could try remoting into to his machine using team viewer or logmein if he can't manage himself as it can manifest itself in quite a few locations.... If you are able to remote in of course!

+1 for Microsoft Security Essentials although I have seen viruses and malware infect computers with it like it's not even there. Just remember no anti virus is perfect

Thanks people, esp.GG, mwb did the job, brother is a happy bunny again.

No problem, just remember, it is always useful to have an "On Demand" program like MWB installed and up to date, even if you only ever need to use it once in anger. But Safe Mode is your friend, a lot of even the most nasty of viri can be deleted or neutered by MWB from there, often doing enough to let you download and install a more specialised removal program like COMBOFIX to dig out the really deeply embedded stuff.

MWB is good ,but at times if you need safe mode ,then Superantispyware finds a lot of the things letting MWB run normally . Personally ,I run Zone alarm and avast ( on XP) .Only problem with Superantispyware is that you need to disable it at start up -otherwise it can take a long time loading .Only time I needed it anger was after getting a copy of the fake windows bug . MWB needed safe mode - I installed Superantispyware to kill it dead .

I was finding everything slowing down my elderly PC. Switched from Avast to MSSE but it kept chugging away on something for ages. I'm trying Panda Cloud antispyware which is supposedly very lightweight. Will see what it does.
