If mobile waves cause our bodies issues, what about all this wireless power stuff?

Since the dawn of time, the human race has been bathed in the radio emissions emananting from the universes big bang. These continue to this day and are strong enough to be picked up ona portable radio set - just try de-tuning your radio to a point between broadcast stations. The sushing/whoosing shound you hear is the "White noise" radio frequency residue from the big bang.

I don't think ordinary radio waves, such as medium wave frequencies of the sort that Smashy and Nicey would use, cause two many health problems (Unless you live on top of a TV/Radio transmitter - and the Radiological Protection Board (Or whatever its called these five minutes)would probably dispute even that proposition).

Its modulated and pulsed radio transmissions that seem to cause health issue i.e. such as those coming from mobile phones and aircraft radars.

I would have thought that this proposal is "lifed" in that terrestial TV/radio transmitters won't be around for much longer and seems flawed in that the energy being harvested will only be available within the transmission footprint of a transmission aerial and certainly won't be for free -somebodies paying for the power to run-up a signal.

Surely, if there's a radio signal to be harvested its the big bang - put the trouble is that the frequency of that is all over the place -hence the "White noise", making it difficult to tune into.

Suspect that this arcticle has been dredged-up to fill a bit of space on the BBC web site and may slightly aid the uninitiated's appreciation of science as part of the current, "Put science in the public's face campaign" that's been going on over the last year.

Didn't one of the Space organisations put foward a proposal about 10 years ago in a slightly different form and scale - orbitting solar power station satellites that would convert electrical energy generated in space from solar cells and beam it to the ground using directional radio beam ?

If you were near that, you definately get added snap, crackle and pop at breakfast time.

Bearing in mind that they can't even handle the digital TV handover without screwing-up everybodies signal (I've had no usuablel ITV digital since last October - some say no loss incurred there then), I think we're safe from orbiting power stations for the time being.

That said though, down on their luck Sky viewers in possession of a hooky decoding card could presumably pull the same trick as those amongst us who used to re-charge their ni-cads from the loacl lamp standard ?

In order to absorb the low power radiation you have to have an antenna tuned to the right frequency so your body wouldn't actually absorb much of it.

Your phone uses a more powerful signal which is where the worry comes from but there isn't much evidence to show it actually happens. It's still not in the category of ionising radiation where real damage can get done.

Sunlight is far more dangerous in reality.
