What sort of mileageis a 1.8T Engine capable of?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Ive always wanted a superb  and Ive spotted a 2004 Superb Prestige 1.8T Petrol with the Tiptronic Automatic gearbox for sale cheapish but it has 171K Miles on her.

Just wondering should I steer clear or are these engines good for much more mileage? Apparently its being serviced well so far.

Any advice appreciated

Regards

Tom

I traded in my octy vrs with 125k on the clock & the engine was perfect, these engines can suffer with a blocked up oil pick up pipe, its a easy job to change it though, thats quite a mileage! if its had all its oil changes, cambelts etc on time & the turbo is ok & its cheap enough i wouldnt be put off by the mileage, what condition is the rest of the car in??

These engines will last forever if serviced using fully synthetic oil. The oil system problems stem from using sub-standard, semi-synthetic included or mineral, oils.

I got to 130kish I think in my 1.8t Superb. Only problem was a split pipe. I miss that car :(

My mates 1.8T Superb ran 445286 miles before it died from rust at the windows and headlights. He bought a new one with fewer miles. The old engine would probably still run fine, but as he said, there was too many parts that broke down in the end and the car itself isn't expensive anymore.

That has to be the highest mileage Superb ever!! Was that really in miles or km?? Even 445000 km is lot of miles!

Well i have no proof, but it was in miles approx. 712000 km. I understand if you have doubts, even I didn't believe it until i saw the counter myself. What i don't get is how the pistons were not worn away. I guess he might have changed those once or twice or changed other critical parts, that would've died over time. Point is, when it was scrapped it could still start, even on the first try. :o

I do believe you mate, if looked after any car will survive a long time. The 1.8T is an over-engineered engine, people regularly tune them to 200-300HP, even higher and they run for years no problems, so if left untouched and given a regular supply of good oil, and if mostly subjected to long distance drives (quite easy in continental Europe due to fewer cars per mile) and fewer cold starts I am not surprised it made it to high mileage.

He also had a webasto boiler installed to preheat the car, which i guess will extend any cars life. Wish i had the money for that myself.
